Enticing eucalyptus and blackberry aromas in this full-bodied, smooth Australian red wine. Sure to please even the most hardened cabernet fan. Loaded with concentrated dark red fruit flavours on the finish, along with a spice kick. This robust red wine was not fined or filtered. Pair with meat lovers pizza. The palate of this big Australian Shiraz offers lots of black fruit and smoke. This wine was matured for 12-18 months in a combination of French and American oak. Fermentation was stopped two-thirds of the way through and juice was not filtered. "Footbolt" is named in honour of the racehorse that founder Joseph Osborn had to sell in order to start the d'Arenberg winery in 1912. Since 1912, the Osborn family has farmed vineyards in the McLaren Vale. Winemaker Chester Osborn takes small batches of grapes that are crushed then transferred to open fermenters and then foot treading is undertaken. Yalumba Patchwork Shiraz 2014, Barossa Valley, Australia: A terrific Shiraz from the Barossa Valley. Yalumba has been making wine in this region for 160 years. The winery creates this wine from a "patchwork quilt" of soils, aspects, microclimates and cultures, thus the name. The winery has selected specific parts of its cool-climate vineyard in the Eden Valley for this "patchwork" blend of Shiraz. It marries these with some warm plots in the Barossa Valley to create a remarkable wine. A rich, full-bodied, supple Australian red wine with attractive aromas of black plum, blackberries and black raspberries. Incredible concentration and depth with a long finish. Mas des Bressades Cuvée Tradition 2017, Costières De Nîmes, Rhône A.P., France: Produced by Cyril Marès, prop.-vigneron in the Costières de Nîmes region where only 7% of wine made is white. This area is the southernmost appellation in the Rhône, and therefore summers are very hot, with more than 2,700 hours of sunshine every year, moderated only by cool breezes from the river delta called the Petite Camargue where the Rhône River meets the Mediterranean. Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir 2017, Hemel-En-Aarde Valley, Walker Bay W.O., South Africa: I love this wine year after year, and I'd rather be drinking it than writing about it so I'll let the previous note stand. Hamilton Russell Chardonnay 2017, Hemel-En-Aarde Valley, Walker Bay W.O., South Africa: The 2017 vintage of the Hamilton Russell is a cool-climate Chardonnay from Hemel-En-Aarde Valley, Walker Bay wine region. This vintage is fresh with great acidity after receiving only partial malolactic conversion. The wine was matured in 40% new oak barrel for over nine months. Hamilton Russel Vineyards sees the strongest maritime influence of any winegrowing area in South Africa. At less than two kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean's Walker Bay, the cooling influence of the cold Benguela current flowing up from Antarctica flows over the vineyard with the prevailing southeast winds allowing for cooler days but warmer nights and warmer winters. The overall climate is Mediterranean. A chardonnay lover's chardonnay. Rich, concentrated and hedonistic, yet with a nervy edge in this South African Chardonnay. A concentrated vein of tree fruit and minerality. Perfectly balanced between luscious ripe peach and green apple, toasty oak and a nervy seam of acidity for a range of dishes, from roast chicken to seafood. Highly recommended. Columbia Crest H3 Merlot 2015, Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley, Washington, United States: The difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures in this eastern Washington state wine region is the reason why Merlots like this one are terrific. In October, during the last weeks of the key ripening season before harvest the nighttime temperature can plummet from 35 degrees in the day to just 20 degrees at night which allows for ripening during the day but then the grapes stop in the night and preserve freshness and natural acidity. The great thing is that the grapes don't get over-ripe as in some warm climates where photosynthesis produces more sugar and therefore more alcohol. That's why Washington red wines are often a moderate 13% alcohol. This wine features aromas of dark spice, fleshy blackberry and smoke. Pair with roast beef.
