d'Arenberg's The Footbolt 2016 is a consistent, pleasing, full-bodied Shiraz with its hallmark dark berry, blackberry and eucalyptus flavours on the palate. Great value under $20 as well. Not fined or filtered the wine is matured for 12-18 months in a combination of French and American oak. Fermentation was stopped two-thirds of the way through and juice was not filtered. "Footbolt" is named in honour of the racehorse that founder Joseph Osborn had to sell in order to start the d'Arenberg winery in 1912. Since 1912, the Osborn family has farmed vineyards in the McLaren Vale. Perfect with grilled steaks on the grill, but can easily cellar for three more years to start showing its best.

Shiraz food pairings: black bean soup, blue cheese, caramelized onion dip, grilled steak.

Reviews and Ratings

Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

The Footbolt 2016, a warm Shiraz from d’Arenberg Winery, located in McLaren Vale, Australia, shows aromas of dark skin plum, blackberry jam, lavender, bacon fat, smoke and espresso. Full-bodied, the Footbolt shows a lovely balance and a warm finish. Flavors of ripe plum, blackberry, lavender, leather, vanilla and sweet tobacco. Enjoy!
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Lots of flavour! Aromas of blackberry, plum, cedar, evergreen, and black pepper. Full bodied, fruit forward and peppery on the palate, with smotth tannin to stand up to anything you throw on the grill for your next BBQ.
Beautiful nose of lush ripe cherries on d'Arenberg's The Footbolt 2016. Great value on this delicious medium-plus-bodied Australian Shiraz, meaty, savoury with blackberry compote, underbrush and savoury spice flavours on the palate. Enjoy now or hold in cellar for another three years. This wine was matured for 12-18 months in a combination of French and American oak. Winemaker Chester Osborn takes small batches of grapes that are crushed then transferred to open fermenters and then foot treading is undertaken. - Community Wine Reviews
