Yalumba Patchwork Shiraz 2013, Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia: Shiraz from the Barossa Valley shines, and here is a prime example. With 160 years of Barossa heritage, Yalumba shows exactly what Barossa terroir is capable of. The winery creates this wine from a "patchwork quilt" of soils, aspects, microclimates and cultures, thus the name. The winery has selected specific parts of its cool-climate vineyard in the Eden Valley for this "patchwork" blend of Shiraz. It marries these with some warm plots in the Barossa Valley to create a remarkable wine. A rich, full-bodied, supple Australian red wine with attractive aromas of black plum, blackberries and black raspberries. Incredible concentration and depth with a long finish. The site of today's De Bortoli vineyard was known as "the summer paddock". It had a large dam and held green pasture for the summer months. The Pinot grapes for this wine grow on mature vines in the Dixon Creek, Yarra Glen Tarrawarra and Woori Yallock vineyards. Each vineyard is picked and vinified separately. Flat Rock Riesling 2014, Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario V.Q.A., Canada: The winery sent me the 2014 vintage of this lovely riesling to taste and evaluate, which is fortunate since it was the 2013 vintage at the LCBO tasting. The Bean Coffee Pinotage 2015, Western Cape, Stellenbosch W.O., South Africa: Totally coffee-espresso on the nose and palate of this pinotage, and unapologetically (and delightfully) so. Weirdly wonderful: end your day with the alcoholic version of your morning coffee. Full-bodied and smooth red wine with some black fruit flavours as well. The coffee-style pinotage has become popular among South African winemakers. The grape Pinotage, the most iconic red wine for South Africa, was originally created by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault grapes. Produced by Mooiplaas Wines, this red wine is robust, rugged and full of character. The espresso notes are derived from both the toasting and type of French oak barrels in which the wine is aged. Try it with gourmet hamburgers or meat lovers' pizza. Drink: 2016-2020. 251165 14% XD 750 mL  $15.95 Score: 90/100. October 15, 2016 Best Value Red Wine. Glorious Game Wine Full Review
