Elegant and distinguished Australian Cabernet Sauvignon from the cool climate of Coonawarra. Great balance and restraint, yet there's no shortage of flavour and character. Black fruit, spice and smoke. Perfect for prime rib.

Cabernet Sauvignon food pairings: medium rare venison backstrap with roasted new potatoes; grilled steaks or roast beef.

Reviews and Ratings

Douglas McMillan rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Dark black cherry aromas are most prominent, with graphite, dark chocolate, and new leather. High acidity, lots of extremely fine tannins, and a palate mainly tart red, and full black cherry. This is a very rich, elegant wine, with the acidity making it really pop.
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A truly delicious Cab Sauv from Coonawarra, South Australia. Deep ruby and aromatic with dark berries, plums and hints of mocha and violets on the nose and palate. Well-structured and smooth with lingering spicy dark fruit on an elegant finish. Exceptional value, especially at current price.
Tasted Dec. 2016
This elegant Cabernet is crafted from the famous terra rossa soils of The Menzies Estate in Coonawarra, South Australia. This wine has been matured with French oak then rested in cool marble cellars. It is an integrated wine, forward in style with rich, bright, deep ruby colour and lashings of berry fruits and violets, yet finishing with a soft, smooth and long-lasting palate. A wine that truly reflects the reputation of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
The vintage began well with mid-winter rains filling the soils. A dry, warm spring advanced flowering two weeks earlier than average and was completed quickly and evenly. Yields were moderate due to lower bunch numbers. Dry conditions throughout December and January kept berry size small so the fruit harvested late March and early April had excellent concentration of colour, flavour and tannin.
WINEMAKING/VITICULTURE
The grapes were crushed into small static fermenters; when fermentation commenced the temperature was allowed to peak early at 30°C, then given more control at around 20°C. This ensures good extraction of colour and tannin. The grapes stayed on skins for around 10 days before pressing.
TASTING NOTES
This wine is medium depth crimson in colour with a vibrant crimson hue. Its aroma is bright with fresh mulberry and cassis fruit with musk and vanilla bass notes. The palate is well structured, it opens with juicy ripe Cabernet Sauvignon berry fruits coupled with nuances of grilled plums. The mid palate builds with textured fullness of fruit and savoury tannin yielding to a velvety, lengthy finish.
