Australia

Dandelion Vineyards Lion's Tooth Shiraz Riesling 2013, Mclaren Vale, South Australia, Australia: A towering, blockbuster Australian red wine blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Riesling. Wood smoke and black fruit with a layered, full-bodied goodness. Great balance and character. The winemaker encourages the humble dandelion, considered a weed, to grow among the vines to suppress winter weeds, provide mulch in the summer and offer their Wishing Clocks in the spring to blow off to make wishes come true. Whole bunches of grapes from the MacMurtie's Vineyard are hand-harvested during the first week of March and fermented in open top fermenters with their stalks on and on top of some Riesling for 11 days while being hand plunged twice a day. Then there was a delicate basket pressing and aging in mostly older French oak barrels. Dances beautifully with a grilled steak. H3 Columbia Crest Merlot 2014, Horse Heaven Hills, Washington State, United States: The difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures in this eastern Washington state wine region is the reason why Merlots like this one are terrific. In October, during the last weeks of the key ripening season before harvest the nighttime temperature can plummet from 35 degrees in the day to just 20 degrees at night which allows for ripening during the day but then the grapes stop in the night and preserve freshness and natural acidity. The great thing is that the grapes don't get over-ripe as in some warm climates where photosynthesis produces more sugar and therefore more alcohol. That's why Washington red wines are often a moderate 13% alcohol. This wine features aromas of dark spice, fleshy blackberry and smoke. Pair with roast beef. Merlot food pairings: grilled pork chops, pepper steak, duck, grilled lamb, cheese. Drink: 2017 - 2020 209874 14.5% D 750 mL $22.95 Score: 92/100. March 2017. Top Rated Red Wine Full Review Add to Shopping Cart
