Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina: Robust and savoury with blackberry and wild cassis. Firm tannic grip. A great value. Pair with a rare steak. Dominio del Plata produces this blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and 5% Merlot grown at 1,160 metres above sea level. The wine was aged for 13 months in 80% new French oak barrels and 20% second use French oak. Winemaker Susana Balbo has been unofficially dubbed the "Evita of Wine" in her native Argentina. She had been making superb wine for 25 years as a winemaking consultant before establishing her own winery, Dominio del Plata, in 1999. The Signature line of wines are her premium portfolio. Teusner The Riebke Shiraz 2016, Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia: The 2016 vintage of the Riebke is a blockbuster Barossa Shiraz produced by the Riebke brothers in the Ebenezer district of the Barossa Valley. The grapes grow on old, low yielding vines and the family has made wine for six generations. Kym Teusner is winemaker. Look for dark, ripe fruits, savoury spice on this full-bodied big red. This wine offers minty blackberry and toasty oak on the nose with a good grip on the palate. Barossa is Australia's heartland for Shiraz. This one offers great complexity and a long finish. Dandelion Lioness Of Mclaren Vale Shiraz 2016, Mclaren Vale, South Australia, Australia: These winemakers see the devil in the weeds, allowing dandelions to grow among the vine as they suppress other weeds and provide nutritious mulch. The "wishing clocks" of white seed in the spring provide new life. The Shiraz grapes are sourced form a single vineyard in the foothills of the McLaren Vale. The vines are planted in ironstone pebble laden with clay loam, over ancient Kurrajong Formation geology of silica cemented conglomerate ideally suited to grow Shiraz. Full-bodied, robust and rustic with full-throttle black fruit, smoke, oak and spice aromas. Polished tannins and a long finish. This single vineyard Australian red wine is made from the Shiraz grape. Bunches are hand-picked in mid-March and fermented together in open top fermenters with ambient yeast and hand plunging for 12 days before basket pressing and aging in mostly French oak barriques before bottling without fining. Thierry Delaunay Touraine (2017) is bone dry with gooseberry, citrus and a flinty minerality characteristic of the Loire region with its sandy, chalky and flinty clay soils. Excellent Old World Sauvignon Blanc that has the herbal grassy power and concentration of a New World wine. Pure lime focus in this mouth-watering, medium-bodied French white wine. Porcupine Ridge Sauvignon Blanc 2017, Western Cape W.O., South Africa: The crested porcupine featured on the front label is common in South Africa. They are noisy animals that move with a ponderous gait with lots of sniffing and grunting, eating mostly potatoes and root vegetables. They are also nocturnal and shy, and many live in the vineyards of this winery. In 1776, the South African winery Boekenhoutskloof was founded and has since become one of the most known producers in the country. Stunningly good price. South Africa does so well with Sauvignon Blanc, and it shows in this wine. Grassy, nettle, herbal refreshment with a medium-bodied weight. Lots of mouth-watering acidity. Barón de Ley Reserva Rioja 2013, Rioja D.O.C.A., Spain: Estate bottled, Baron De Ley Reserva, the 2013 vintage is a toasty, smoky, robust red wine from Rioja. This is a full-bodied and rich red made from 100% Tempranillo. Smoky, toast, full-bodied Spanish red wine with notes of dark red fruit and leather. This Spanish winery is situated about 300 miles south of Bordeaux. The Baron de Ley estate even looks like a French Château. This wine is matured in both American and French oak barrels.
