Primus Carmenère 2015, Colchagua Valley, Chile: This robust Chilean red wine is made from Caménère vines planted with a southern exposure along the Tinguiririca River's old terraces. The winery practices sustainable agriculture. A lovely expression of Colchagua Valley terroir. This is a terrific, full-bodied Chilean red wine made from the country's signature red wine grape Caménère. Caménère is believed to have traveled from Bordeaux, where it was one of the six original grape varieties planted there before the devastation from the root louse Phylloxera in 1867 wiped out all the vines. Chile's natural protections from this vine louse include the ocean, the Andes mountains and the dessert. Caménère is named for it's colour - crimson (carmine). It has some similarities with Merlot but is not the same grape. Aromas of dark red fruit and toasty oak and pepper on the finish. Pair with grilled pork chops. Montes Purple Angel 2014, Colchagua Valley, Chile: There's a reason this Chilean wine has a cult following. Purple Angel will make you feel as though you've gone to heaven aloft a cloud of sensory pleasure. The 2014 vintage is a blend of 92% Caménère and 8% Petit Verdot grapes. Caménère was re-discovered only about 12 years ago, believed to be extinct after phylloxera hit its ancestral home in Bordeaux in 1880. That's why it's also called the "Jurassic Park" grape. The vines for this wine are planted on steep slopes. If you love full-bodied, juicy, fruit-forward wines, this is your apogee as it also has all of those other great hallmarks of superb wine: complexity, balance and finish. Pair with a juicy steak. Food pairings: veal roast, slow-cooked brisket of beef, rabbit fricassee. Drink: 2017 - 2023 62364 14.5% XD 750 mL $96.95 Score: 99/100. September 2017.
