A full-bodied and savoury Californian red wine, with a different flavour profile derived from the lesser-known grape Petite Sirah. Spicy exotic black fruit aromas and flavours play across the palate. Complex and tasty: here's a red wine to get you out of your Cabernet rut (if you're in one). Try it with grilled pork chops.

Petite Sirah food pairings: beef, game.

Reviews and Ratings

Mary Anne van Gaal rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

This Californian Petite Sirah has a remarkable rich red colour. Aromas of berries and sweet floral notes abound. On the palate, flavours of cocoa, blackberries and spice layer the finish. Terrific with grilled red meat.
Lynn van der Linde - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Wow! This wine seduces with aromas of dark chocolate, eucalyptus, blueberries and leather, chased with flavours of dark jammy fruits, and a lingering peppery finish. Would pair beautifully with gorgonzola pasta sauces or dark chocolate.
Terry Jeans - Certified S rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Very purple and still quite tannic, could do with some more age, but still an amazing wine that is bold and delicious. Full-bodied and well balanced, an amazing food wine if your wallet can handle it.
Tasted Nov. 16, 2014.
Donna Hargrove rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

This is a delicious Petite Syrah from the Napa Valley. With floral notes, it has the rich full bodied flavour that is typical of Petite Syrahs. Tomato sauces, roasted vegetables and a rare steak would all pair deliciously with this wine..
Douglas McMillan rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Juicy plum and black cherry, india ink, vanillla, eucalyptus, dried herbs, and more. The taste is extremely well balanced between the juicy cherry and, blackbery, and cassis, the acidity, and the well rounded tannins. Pair with roast beef, stew, steak, pork, etc. If you don't have the perfect food, this is a perfect wine for drinking on its own.
Astrid Young - Sommelier ISG CAPS rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A bit austre on first nose, with some brambly dark bush fruit poking through. Fairly seamlessly integrated with the oak treatment, the only hint being a quick and seductive whisper of vanilla-caramel on the mid palate. Rich and focused on its own power, its a bit of a mystery as it unfolds, bringing cedar, leather, ripe and dried black fruits, brambleberries and field berry compote nicely wrapped up in a bracing acidic cloak which is part tannin and part of the reason why this is such a great blending wine, bringing great depth and a bottomless fount of muscle into your glass. Barbeque, prime rib, most game meats do well - especially venison, done medium rare with a nice blueberry reduction.
Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Big bold and delicious! Loads of dark fruit, dark chocolate, chalky tannins that crave rare beef, and a couple hours of decanting. Tasted November 2014. 91 points. Matt Steeves - www.nataliemaclean.com
Sean O'Regan - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Nov 16, 2014: Dark ruby/purple, dark fruited, blackberry, stewed fruit, oak/baking spice. Full bodied, richly textured, plummy, dark berry, oak spice and mineral with good acidity to balance firm tannins. Fine wine for rare beef or hearty braised dishes. Drink overy the next 10+ years.
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This wine has an intensity to it! Rich fruit aromas of blueberry, plum, dried fruit and a hint of chocolate. Big flavour including leather, cedar, and rich ripe and dried fruit. Intense tannin, full bodied, and a longer finish. Have this with a nice steak dinner, maybe on a special occasion. 90+
Nick Onischuk - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

The Stags Leap Winery Petite Sirah 2011 is a must buy wine. Features aromas and flavours of dark berry fruit, blackberry, oak and spice. Delicious! Tasted November 2016 (90/100)
Martha Kelly AIWS - CS rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

From the heart of the Stags Leap District ,this full-bodied wine has layers of complex dark fruit, blueberry, baking and pungent spices, dark chocolate, and an earthy minerality.
The firm tannins carry the flavours through on the long, complex finish.
Pair with finer cuts of beef or strong cheeses.
Drink now or cellar until 2020.
Date tasted: October 2015.
Tom Vigeant reviewed this wine as follows:

Pencil lead, licorice, a bit of vanilla. Medium to full body, firm tannins, medium plus acidity. Finish a bit short, with oak notes.
Community Reviewer reviewed this wine as follows:

Rich aromatics of ripe blueberry, blackberry, and cocoa together with floral back notes. On the palate, ripe black fruit, espresso, spice and mocha commingle to create a luscious and balanced wine that features structured tannins and juicy, berry flavors to the end.

The 2011 vintage of this iconic Californian red wine is mostly Petite Sirah, but there are small splashes of Syrah, Grenache, Carignane, Mourvèdre and Viognier grapes in the blend to add complexity. - Community Wine Reviews
