Finca Sophenia Reserve Malbec 2014, Gualtallary, Tupungato, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina: Mocha and dark chocolate aromas from generous oak aging. The famous winemaker consultant Michel Rolland works with this winery, and his signature is here in the robust, luscious fruit profile of this wine. The vineyards for this wine are located in the foothills of the Andes at an altitude of 1200 metres above sea level, which is on the front label, and the wine is matured in French oak for 8 months. The results is a intensely concentrated wine offering aromas of black plums, cherries and blackberries along with some smoke and fresh vibrant blackberries and toasty oak on the finish. Quinta do Crasto Old Vines Reserva 2014, Douro D.O.C., Portugal: The 2014 vintage of this classic Reserva Old Vines is a robust Portuguese red wine that's a field blend (vines with different grapes planted and intermixed in the same vineyard, with the vines about 70 years old. That results in the depth and concentration of flavour we have in the glass. The wine was matured 85% French oak barrels and 15% American barrels for 18 months. Winemaker Manuel Lobo has done a superb job here and reduced the total yield by 30% by being extra picky (literally) with the grapes that go into this wine. Lots of fleshy black currant and smoke with a long, satisfying finish. Decant 1 hour and enjoy with a rare steak. Food pairings: grilled meats, vegetarian stew, braised pork ribs.
