Sauternes Lur Saluces Château De Fargues Meritage 2005, Bordeaux, France: Gorgeous elixir of apricot preserves yet saved from being cloying by a lovely seam of acidity. Aromas of fresh, fleshy quince rolled gently in brown sugar: what a delightful dessert wine that seems to get better every year! Gorgeously seductive aromas and flavour of honey, pear preserves, quince jelly and apricot blossom. Luscious, rich and round with a mouth-filling texture and a hedonistic length that keeps on giving. Beautiful cinnamon sprinkled apple pie cooling on a country cottage window on the finish. There's a long, lingering lemon meringue finish. Lovely! Tawse Winery Inc. Méritage 2009, V.Q.A., Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, Canada: This blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 27% Franc is incredibly dark and concentrated with a rich core of fleshy black fruit, smoke and dark chocolate notes. This wine was aged in small French oak barrels for those smoky, vanilla spice aromas: delicious! You can order this wine directly from the winery at www.tawsewinery.ca. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Meritage 2005, Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France: This is a towering wine that still needs cellar time. Very tight and tannic, but it will open up into a blockbuster, especially given the spectacular 2005 vintage. Only 10,000 cases were produce of this traditional blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. In the past, the winery produced about 20,000 cases of this wine. It offers classic aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, cassis, licorice and graphite. All the elements are here of a benchmark wine from Bordeaux. Château Haut-Bailly P.L. Graves, Nath. Johnston & Fils Meritage 2005, Bordeaux, France: The 2005 vintage in Bordeaux was a spectacular one, the best since 2000, and this wine shows that signature. It has great structure, yet also great elegance and finesse. There's a core of concentrated black fruit and toasty oak, but it's also earthy, balanced and complex. On a long, satisfying finish, there is armas of led pencil (a good thing) and earthy-smoke. Medium- to full-bodied. Superb craftsmanship.
