Lafage 2014

Cotes Catalanes, Roussillon I.G.P., France

Robert scored this wine: 90/100

This Cote Sud comprised of Syrah and Grenache grapes is a lovely garnet with long, droopy legs. Since it was aged in concrete vessels, the fruit has been preserved. And it is fruity. Lots of blackberry and cherry on the nose, along with anise. On the palate is a very dry wine, with tannins that grip just a little (it's still young). Pair this with fowl or pork dishes. For $15.95 this is a great deal.

Il Mascalese

Antichi Vinai Il Mascalese Nerello Mascalese 2013

Bought this on sale for $13.75 at the LCBO. I am new to this varietal and I like it. Displays a lovely, light cranberry hue with medium-thick legs that slide down the glass with a slight pace. Bright fruits on the nose like cranberry and raspberry, with some dried flowers, and hints of cigar. On the palate is similar to the nose with a lively acidity. This wine would pair nicely with grilled fish and tomato-based pasta dishes.

At $17 this is fantastic. On the nose, there is black cherries, black raspberries, menthol, earth, cured olives, green pepper and tomato leaf. On the palate, you get big ripe fruit, dusty tannins and mouthwatering acidity. All the components are delicately balanced and end with a lengthy finish. Enjoy on its own, or with leg of lamb done with rosemary and anchovies (trust me) or beef shank. A wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon.

Black Paw Vineyard

Coyote's Run Estate Winery Black Paw Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012

Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario, Canada

Robert scored this wine: 88/100

Coyote's Run Estate Winery is located in the Four Mile Creek sub-appellation of the Niagara Peninsula. This area is characterized by warm days and cool nights throughout the growing season. Coyote's soils are very interesting as one part of the vineyard has red soils and the other part has black soils. As a result, each year the winery releases a "Red Paw" and a "Black Paw" Pinot Noir. The 2012 vintage in Niagara was punctuated by an early spring, followed by a long, hot summer, and a dry harvest period. This allowed for a steady and even period of berry ripening. The 2012 Black Paw Pinot Noir has a garnet colour with a subtle hint of brick brown. Lots of earth, dark cherry, subtle mushroom, cinnamon, and oak spice aromas are complemented by a palate that has sour dark cherry, cranberry flesh, and some earth tones. The tannins are medium and the acidity is lively. Enjoy this wine with cedar planked salmon, duck breast or roasted chicken.

Kent-He Portage Pinot Noir 2011

Prince Edward County, Canada

Robert scored this wine: 89/100

Full disclosure: I am a big fan of Keint-He winery. They produce Pinot Noir that is not able to be compared with other such wines in Ontario. They are charting their own course. The 2011 is a lightish cranberry red with barely discernible flecks of brown (you can see it in the reflection). The nose is a complex melange of tomato leaf, ripe cherry, wet cedar and oak, overripe strawberry, and a subtle hint of caramel and vanilla. I even get a bit of water chestnut. The palate mirrors the nose and has a fair amount of body for a wine weighing in at 12.1%. The acidity is there (no more than medium) and the tannins round it out in a very soft way. The mouthfeel is deliciously rustic with a pretty good finish. I am reluctant to suggest a pairing. Enjoy this on its own with good company that appreciates the complexities of wine - and they're not afraid to encounter something charting its own course.
