Lailey Vineyard Syrah 2012

Niagara River, Ontario V.Q.A., Canada

Robert scored this wine: 92/100

Lailey Vineyard is situated in the Niagara River sub-appellation of the Niagara Peninsula, which is known for its soil variation and the moderating effects of the Niagara River. The 2012 Syrah is a delightful wine that pleases the senses in many different ways. First, the appearance is a luscious purple-cranberry hue. Second, there is medium intensity on the nose, with alluring aromas of charcuterie, smoke, vanilla, pencil shavings, and dark fruits like blackberry and blueberry. Third, the palate largely confirms the nose, but does reveal some cocoa nibs and black and white pepper. The acidity and tannins are incredibly balanced leading to a lengthy finish that begs for another sip. This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with meaty pizza or a pulled pork sandwich. Syrah is a difficult grape to grow in a cool-climate like Ontario, but Lailey almost makes it seem effortless. This is top-notch.

At $17 this is fantastic. On the nose, there is black cherries, black raspberries, menthol, earth, cured olives, green pepper and tomato leaf. On the palate, you get big ripe fruit, dusty tannins and mouthwatering acidity. All the components are delicately balanced and end with a lengthy finish. Enjoy on its own, or with leg of lamb done with rosemary and anchovies (trust me) or beef shank. A wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon.

White wine done ripasso style, eh? I will admit that I was a bit sceptical at first. But once I put the wine to my nose that scepticism was transformed into devotion and belief. The 2013 Enchanted by The Foreign Affair Winery is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The nose has medium plus intensity and immediately the typical gooseberry from Sauvignon Blanc takes a prominent spot on the stage. Grapefruit and lime zest are also present, along with wonderful flinty and shale-like notes. The palate is quite bold with rich concentrated citrus fruits and lemon meringue pie. The acidity is incredibly lively making the mouth water for a lengthy period of time. The finish is long and zesty. This wine can be paired with shell fish or a nice vegetarian curry as the lively acidity and lower alcohol would be good contenders with spice and heat. This is a really delicious wine.

Lafage 2014

This Cote Sud comprised of Syrah and Grenache grapes is a lovely garnet with long, droopy legs. Since it was aged in concrete vessels, the fruit has been preserved. And it is fruity. Lots of blackberry and cherry on the nose, along with anise. On the palate is a very dry wine, with tannins that grip just a little (it's still young). Pair this with fowl or pork dishes. For $15.95 this is a great deal.

Matchbook Tempranillo 2010

Dunnigan Hills, California, United States

Robert scored this wine: 89/100

This wine from Dunnigan Hills is a blend of Tempranillo, Tannat and Graciano. Tempranillo comprises 83% of the blend. It was aged in a mixture of American, French and Hungarian oak. Lots of ripe black and red berries on the nose with nice vanilla, cedar and spice. The palate has a similar profile as the nose, with the fruit having a pleasurable intensity, along with smooth and firm tannins and some acidity this side of lively. This will pair nicely with pepperoni pizza, cheese and charcuterie board, or meat lasagna. This should be enjoyed now and over the next couple years. At $22.95 you are getting a well-structured, slightly complex and elegant wine. This is California doing a Spain varietal very well.
