Grange

Penfolds Grange 2002

South Australia, Australia
2647 days ago

Rachelle scored this wine: 97/100

Penfolds Grange has carved its proper place in history as being Australia's most highly regarded wine for the past forty plus years. These wines are carefully crafted into absolute perfection, start to finish. This 2002 version was sourced from 77.5% Barossa Valley and 22.5% from McLaren Vale. Included in the blend is 1.5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It spent 17 months in 100% new American oak. Grange tells a story, it boasts the stylistic vision of Max Schubert and his want and desire to achieve this top quality production without ever compromising or wavering from any step along the way. What a bouquet - violets, leather, chocolate, pencil, black fruit and oak - a silky texture and wonderful balance with decadent flavors of licorice, blackberry, and spice. It is so packed with layers of richness and elegance - Peter Gago and his team have outdone themselves in the creation of this masterpiece. Drink through 2050. These wines requires mid-long term cellaring to allow them to develop into wines that are simply off the charts. Wow! To top it off, sharing this 2002 Vintage with DLynn Proctor, Master Sommelier and passionate Penfolds Ambassador was a delightful experience not soon to be forgotten.

The color in the glass is simply outstanding - pinkish with a slight copper hue, it is sheer elegance and perfection at its finest. It tastes as though each rose petal was hand picked and preserved perfectly amidst a selection of the finest organic red fruit. It is so very delicate with harmonious layers of decadence, sheer enjoyment and a real treat from start to finish.

The very definition of true elegance. A beautiful pink color in the glass with copper hues. A bouquet of strawberry, raspberry and cherries and subtle hints of grapefruit, cinnamon, brioche and vanilla. The flavors mirror the nose, strawberry, toast, orange peel, and honey. So fresh on the palate, the acidity is sleek with a gorgeous mouthfeel, dancing bubbles and a lingering silky finish.

5 Stelle Sfursat Valtellina Superiore

This spectacular, award winning wine is created from the finest Nebbiolo grapes in the very best years. The grapes for these wines are grown on incredibly steep mountain slopes, and they are protected from harsh winds as they are well positioned in the Valtellina Valley of Lombardy. The soil is quite dry and lacking dense nutrition thus the vines tend to be strong and grow quite deep. After the harvest the grapes for this wine are dried naturally before three days of cold maceration, then another twelve days of fermentation. After this process, the wine is transferred to new French barrels for twenty months. The color in the glass is bright garnet with inviting scents of plum, cherry, tar, mushrooms, earth and spice. The flavors on the palate are complex, with great depth of flavor and layers showing blackberry, raspberry, cherry, plum and earth with exquisite silky tannins, a great acidity and a long finish.
