Bacon and campfire smoke on the nose of this big Australian red wine from oak aging. It's made from the country's flagship red wine grape Shiraz. Richard Tarlan was a favourite among the jesters to the Queen Elizabeth I and was the first to achieve national celebrity status. This wine is named in his honour, but it's no joke. Pair with lamb cutlets.

Shiraz food pairings: lamb cutlets, hamburgers, espresso and cocoa-rubbed flank steak, black bean soup, cheese.

Aromas of blackberries, India ink, vanilla and candied cherries, and baking spices. The taste is blackberry, vanilla, and raspberry. Quite smooth in the mouth with a medium-long cherry finish with a touch of spice.

Well, no surprises here! Big blackberry nose, creamy berry, cherry, vanilla palate. Pretty standard stuff, a sure-fire crowd pleaser!

A typical new world shiraz…
Presentation: Playful, easy to read label, nice
Appearance: Medium-dark ruby
Nose: Dirty socks, wet wood
Taste: Sour cherries, acidic, leather, tannic.
Finish: leather, sharp, tight.
Overall impression: Fruit forward with a back end of leather and wood.
Value: 2 out of 5
