Featherstone Red Tail 2017 Merlot is ripe cherry, plum and smoky on the nose with lush plum, savoury herbs and spicy on the palate, finishing with lingering mocha notes and a zesty acidity for rich meat dishes. Pair with a roast of pork. Red Tail is made from 100% Merlot wine grapes sourced from the Niagara Peninsula wine region in Ontario. The wine was so named for the red-tailed hawks that patrol the skies above the vineyards of Niagara.

Merlot food pairings: beef, cheese, poultry, pork tenderloin , quesadillas, game.

Reviews and Ratings

Craig Haynes - WSET3 FWS SWS IWS rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This is an elegant merlot from Featherstone Estates. A fresh berry and cherry aromas and trace floral and smoke scents introduced this wine’s medium bodied palate of berry flavours framed by appealing combination of texture and tannins. Enjoy.

Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

Featherstone's Red Tail Merlot pays homage to the winery's use of falconry to protect their (delicious) crop from swarms of grape eating birds. In fact, Featherstone Estate Winery is the only Ontario winery to embrace this eco-friendly crop management practice, which not only helps them produce great grapes but is also very cool to witness in action.

2017 Red Tail is 100% Merlot from Featherstone Vineyard in the Niagara Peninsula. It's an easy-going and very approachable red that showcases Featherstone's soft and fruity Merlot with tangy cherry, plum, and herbs persisting. For ready to enjoy wines like Red Tail I recommend enjoying it now with roast pork, Thanksgiving meals, artisanal cheese, or on its own. Tasted September 2019. 88 points. Red Tail is made from 100% Merlot wine grapes sourced from the Niagara Peninsula wine region in Ontario. The wine was so named for the red-tailed hawks that patrol the skies above the vineyards of Niagara. Look for bright red cherry, dark berry and savoury flavours vibrant on the palate. Tannins are soft and rounded. Well-balanced and juicy. Nicely done. - Community Wine Reviews
