Reviews and Ratings

Deborah Podurgiel WSET IV Candidate - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Vanessa Vineyard Wines are always a treat to taste and their Meritage 2017 is a real treat! Produced from mostly Cabernet Franc with 28% in Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the Similkameen, British Columbia red comes in at 14.6% abv. but you would hardly know that on this big, beautiful, full-bodied red. Rich and savoury with aromas of dark plum, cassis, dried wild herbs sultry smooth on the palate, it slips down with liquid dark cherry, cassis, soft smoky vanilla flavours that linger on a savoury note. Beautiful structure and balanced with fresh acidity for food, enjoy it with a classic skillet ribeye steak and sautéed wild mushrooms. Tasted September 2024.

Meritage 2017 was bottled in 2019 and bottle-aged until it was released in 2023. Grapes for this vintage were sourced and hand-harvested from Vanessa’s estate vineyard and the vintage is produced from mostly free run juice with only “a very small quantity of pressed juice added to balance the tannins.” Each varietal was fermented individually and barrel-aged for eight months with the final assemblage aged 12 more months in American and French oak barrels (40% new).

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
