Taste-wise this is a cross between tawny port and a nutty sherry -- lovely dessert wine! Aromas and flavours of toffee, dry caramel and toasted nuts. Try it with hard cheeses and nuts.

Food pairings: pecan pie, pavlova, bread pudding.

Reviews and Ratings

Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

There's an instant aroma of a box of Sunmaid Raisins that will take you back to your childhood. A blended dance of Merlot, Cabernet and splash of Shiraz fortified to 18% abv. Aged in oak barrels for 3 years. Brilliant deep amber colour with aromas and flavours of nuts, toffee, raisin, prune and warm baking spices. There's a sweet warming alcohol finish that will make you long for a cold winter evening. We can settle for an after dinner cheese and fruit platter at Easter time. Excellent value!
Tasted: April 2017
Sylvain Segard rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This fortified wine is made with Merlot, Cabernets, and Shiraz grapes for Niagara Peninsula barrel-aged for six years. It is not your classic red Porto style dessert wine; rather it is a lighter, fragrant style on its own.

Aromas of red fruit jams, pecan pie, and oxidized wine. The mouth feels surprising crisper than expected due to a good acidity, and the Bordeaux blend structure shows through the silky sweet flavours of caramel toffee, roated nuts, and fruit cake. Score 89. (Reviewed Nov. 2016)
Allan Jackson, formerly of Jackson-Triggs, has created a Canadian port-style wine, Union Forté that's a blend of mainly Cabernet and Merlot grapes with a splash of Syrah and aged 6 years in oak barrels. This fortified wine is made with Merlot, Cabernet and Shiraz grapes from the Niagara Peninsula and has been barrel-aged for six years. The nose on Union Forté is rich with candied cherry, plum and spice aromas, and on the palate there is richness to this dessert wine of plum, dark cherry, raisined fruit with some cocoa and spice. - Community Wine Reviews
