Purple Angel will make you feel as though you've gone to heaven aloft a cloud of sensory pleasure. Can one wine pack more flavour into the bottle? I'm skeptical. If you love full-bodied, juicy, fruit-forward wines, this is your apogee as it also has all of those other great hallmarks of superb wine: complexity, balance and finish. Pair with a juicy steak. Yes please!

Carmenere food pairings: hearty meat dishes, grilled steaks, osso buco.

Reviews and Ratings

Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

A very yummy blend of 92% Carmenere, 8% Petit Verdot, dark garnet with a rich nose of dark berries, cassis, vanilla and hint of dark chocolate. The palate gives delicious ripe plum, cassis, vanilla, dark chocolate and a touch of coffee, in a harmonious mouthfeel with long cassis finish.
Wineboy rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Ripeness levels are supreme. World class balance, world class complexity. Flavours and aromas abound and none overpowers the others. The winemaker can be proud of this epic wine.
Mymi Thesingingsommelier - Sommelier, FWS rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

It was in 1987 that the original Montes founders, Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, two highly experienced wine professionals, decided to realize their dream of producing high quality wines from Chile. In 1988, they joined up with the other two founders, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, who brought their own complementary skills and expertise to the venture. And thus Montes was born, at first under the name Discover Wine.
Winemaker Aurelio Montes has always maintained that 80% of good wine comes from the vineyards and only 20% from the cellar. So vineyard care is paramount. Montes’ commitment to method and process is almost obsessive; nothing is left to chance. They don’t follow conventional recipes, all that is needed are the best grapes and meticulous care is applied in the selection and the processing of them, from vineyard to winery.
In Chile, Carménère is considered a signature variety. It resurfaced in the country after having been thought to be extinct in its original home in Bordeaux.
You will be glad it did when tasting this superb wine!
The Purple Angel is a blend of 92% Carménère and 8% Petit Verdot.
In the glass, it is a bright, very deeply colored purple, almost opaque in the center with thick legs that stain the inside of the glass.
On the nose, it is powerful with spicy gingerbread, dark ripe juicy blackberries & raspberries, roasted beets and toasted oak.
Sultry and expansive on the palate with tons of juicy ripe black plums, blackberries, raspberries! Beautiful structure, fleshy tannins, fresh acidity with an intense finish.
Wow… It is definitely a sexy wine!
Andrew Clarke reviewed this wine as follows:

Gift from Frances and Fred January 2016
This big Chilean red wine is sustainable and dry farmed, resulting in a 65% decrease in water use. Intensely purple-black plums plums. Aged for 12 months French oak barrels. - Community Wine Reviews
