Natalie's Score: 99/100 There's a reason this Chilean wine has a cult following. Purple Angel will make you feel as though you've gone to heaven aloft a cloud of sensory pleasure. The 2015 vintage is a blend of 92% Caménère and 8% Petit Verdot grapes. Caménère was re-discovered only about 12 years ago, believed to be extinct after phylloxera hit its ancestral home in Bordeaux in 1880. That's why it's also called the "Jurassic Park" grape. The vines for this wine are planted on steep slopes. If you love full-bodied, juicy, fruit-forward wines, this is your apogee as it also has all of those other great hallmarks of superb wine: complexity, balance and finish. Pair with a juicy steak.
Food pairings: veal roast, slow-cooked brisket of beef, rabbit fricassee.

Reviews and Ratings
Janet Holden rated this wine as 96/100 with the following review: This full bodied and very smooth red wine has aromas of dark plums, blackberries, cassis and secondary aromas of vanilla, cedar, earth, baking spice and violet. On the palate, the mouth feel is luscious with dark jammy fruits, leather, vanilla, smoke, cedar, and dark chocolate. A delicious wine with a long finish.
Daniel O'Keefe rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review: Nearly opaque in the concentration of its deep purple-red colour. Ripe, juicy, and jammy aromas of blackberry, plum, and blackcurrant, a very fine and subtle green pepper, and mild suggestions of cocoa and oak spice. Tannins are about as smooth as they come, sufficiently robust for red meat, but soft enough to drink without accompaniment. Acidity so well integrated that it goes unnoticed until the mouth waters on the finish. Or is that just anticipation of the next sip? Long finish replays dark fruit and elegant oak character. Certainly worthy of a prized place in the cellar, but ready to drink with a decant now. Enjoy with a rack of lamb or steak, prepared elegantly but simply, and allow this star to shine.
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review: Rich, aromatic and elegant, consistently a great pleasure to drink. Made from 92%Carmenere and 8% Petit Verdot and aged 18 mos in both French and American oak. Dark purple/garnet, with ripe dark fruit, spice and floral fragrances. Excellent structure and balance, velvety tannins, lingering finish. Fantastic beef wine. Tasted Oct. 2018
Simon Chen rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review: Famous label from Montes that is primarily Carmenere. This wine still has the beautiful green pepper, herbal flavors, rich initial fruits but the finish is thin and tea-like dryness. Doesn't seem like it can be aged long. I like other vintages of Purple Angel better
Montes Purple Angel 2015 is simply amazing. There is a reason why this mostly Caménère with some Petit Verdot red Chilean red is one of Chile's best and has a cult following. The wine is lush, smooth, juicy with ripe dark fruit, smoky herbs and velvety tannins. Oh Yeah, Aurelio Montes knows exactly what he's doing. Pair with date night. - Community Wine Reviews
