Sprucewood Shores in Amherstburg on the Detroit River is one of our more southerly wineries. This accounts for the delicate presence of lychee and lemongrass on the nose of its Sauvignon Blanc. White peach and Asian pear join in on the palate. With medium plus acidity and a soupçon of Riesling (10%) it’s not so puckery and would bring out the sweetness of mild cheeses, appetizers like spanakopita or asparagus quiche. Think of this as your winter white, a fireplace worthy sipper as you snuggle from the cold, dreaming of Spring.

Is this oaked or isn’t it? California has a reputation for full, buttery, spicily potent Chardonnays like the flamboyant great aunt at the Christmas get together. Yet the Mayacamas Chardonnay 2016 (Mt. Veeder, Napa) is that quiet young person that you alone notice. The lemony zing of a Meyer gives way to an Asian pear, green apple tang while its lovely acidity holds like an oboe’s long note. Subtle minerality, vanilla, the mouthfeel of lemon curd, a suggestive grace note of almond make this chard as balanced as a tightrope walker. A complement to herbes de provence chicken or sole almondine … and yes, it’s oaked.

So you bet your sis-in-law you could wine match anything and she said, “how ‘bout a stir fry … with ginger”. Yikes. The crisp acidity and citrusy honey/ginger flavours of a dry white Grüner Veltliner will have her thinking you were born a sommelier. Austria’s signature grape varietal needs more attention. Light refreshing, at times effervescent, it’s a frugal alternative to Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc and a hero to those forlorn dishes in search of an ally.

2018 Viognier is shy.  It likes you to notice it and think about it.  This dry white, medium acidic wine smells of rose petals with a hint of bergamot (think Earl Grey tea) a lingering reminiscence of honeysuckle.  On the palate is has a different feel - viscous - and it tastes of tangerine and apricot. When the need to eat arises, it is a wonderful friend to simple roasted chicken, perhaps with a touch of tarragon, gentle curries, fish and seafood, anything with apricots.   The quintessential wine for a moderate existential dilemma.

2018 Falanghina (Fah-lahn-ghee-nah) is a varietal that has been around since antiquity.  Its name is derived from the stakes that support the grapes. It is a dry white that has two styles, fruity and floral.  The Torrevento from Puglia is more floral than fruity. With the scent of honey, white peach, subtle citrus and a whisper of almonds, it shares the same drink-me-now cheekiness as Pinot Grigio.  Yummy with seafood, grilled shrimp, scallops, and lemon/garlic dishes. I enjoyed it with a chickpea and feta salad the other day. Consider it when planning your holiday season wine list. Its medium acidity and floral character make it  perfect for those who love whites in the cooler seasons. The name alone is a conversation starter.
