Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay 2012

Napa Valley, California, United States

Nicole scored this wine: 92/100

For those who don't know the backstory, Mike Grgich was the winemaker behind the famed '73 Chateau Montelena Chard that triumphed at the Judgment of Paris. Vibrant citrus leads the fruit flavours followed by tropical fruit (pineapple, apricot) and minerality that makes it quite Burgundian. This spends 10 mths in French oak with no MLF (Malolactic fermentation). Being a bit higher in acidity this is a wine that pairs well with food. An impressive New World Chardonnay to be sure, but I think the Grgich needs a few more years in the cellar to really shine.

This is a smooth operator with very well integrated oak - delicious mocha, vanilla playing nicely with the ripe red fruit flavours. Mild tannins make this a great match with spicy food (we paired it with Jambalaya). Great weight and a long finish had me toying with bumping up to a 93/94. This is a re-buy for me.

Beautifully ripe tropical fruit flavours - banana, pineapple, & apricot - meets citrus and grapefruit. This is seriously easy drinking - high acidity with good weight to it and medium + finish. Looks like I've got another New Zealand Sauv Blanc to add to my regular rotation

This NZ Chard has a lovely medium gold colour which speaks to its almost decade of age. However on the palate this is still fresh with citrus acidity and some flinty minerality that could put it firmly in Old World territory. This has enough French oak to keep me happy lending a creamy nuttiness but it is kept in check by stonefruit and lemon/lime notes on the lingering finish .

Confidence Frizzante

8th Generation Vineyard Confidence Frizzante Pinot Noir 2012

There's no confusing this BC rosé sparkler with a a rosé Champagne - but hey, how many Champagnes can you get for under $25? Despite being made in the frizzanté method, this displays an impressive mousse. An unusual combo of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris this leans towards off-dry - similar to BC PGs from Kettle Valley & Nichol, which have skin contact - Confidence shares the same beautiful medium salmon colour as these PGs. While being fruit forward, minerality & citrus on the finish provide balance
