Alex: A true legend here, and an incredible treat for anyone to get to try... 26 years young now, the wine has the complexity of maturity but absolutely no signs of fatigue. Utterly haunting nose, you could smell just about anything in its kaleidoscopic, portal-like aroma. Rich plum sauce, fig, sweat, iron, seaweed, berry jam, orange liqueur, old leather, sardines, rhubarb...the list goes on and on. But it's not even the nose that's most amazing here...what a texture and layering of fruit on the palate. It's so sensual, it's dream-like. Expansive, caressing every nook, a swimming pool of flavor, a complete massage blasting you with jets of the sweetest berry fruit. It is indeed quite erotic, and the eternal finish leaves you with a mouthful of iron and rock - and such a pleasant glow, as though you were touched by something truly special. Tannins are resolved, alcohol doesn't show up, this wine is perfectly ready to drink now, but surely will hold this way at least 10-15 more years. For the $500 I paid, an absurd price for a bottle of wine, this one is worth it. A perfect wine? Well who's to say what that is anyway. Though Father and I will say, we weren't left wanting anything more. 100pts

Alex: Opens up with a feral, animal fur and savory spice character that is quite lean on the palate for a Chambertin, but still expansive, fluid and flavorful. It finished with a strong acidic zip. Given a hour or so of air (no decant) though it blooms into a soaring aroma that translates from being animal, spicy and masculine to beguilingly pretty, full of fresh lilac and purple iris flowers tossed in white pepper and clove spice, accenting the sweetest raspberry fruit. The nose shifts ever so casually throughout the 4 hours spent with it...and the palate had fleshed out marvellously. The grace gained on the palate was exemplary, and it held it's strength into the next day. What separates this from the rest in this leaner year is the uncanny balance and regal flow the palate had, supplying an endless stream of mineral laced, complex flavor yet never feeling the least bit heavy. While I believe this will continue to age for another 10 years or so, it's quite ready now if you give it 2 hours to breathe. I don't recommend decanting. 96 pts

97% nebbiolo blended with 3% barbera. Intoxicating bouquet of fresh flowers here, lavish redcurrant, some deep plum of barbera, stunning nose that's still very primary. What a mouthful of angelic grace, so rich and floral, long, sensual, delicate and powerful at once. Such refinement of tannin, subtle, in excellent harmony. This is like a symphony of purity of piemonte, and is only just beginning its curve of evolution. Finishes long and fresh, delicate and strong at once with resounding presence. I'd hold for another 10 if you wish to taste some maturity. 95 pts

Shockingly deep in color for its age, a dark cherry red core approaching orange at the rim. According to Gaia this took 18 years to begin to open up - now boasting a pungent grand marnier, autumn leaves, dried rose, white truffle nose with accents of Roquefort cheese and leather. Very lifted, sappy mature cherry palate, with orange zest and perfume, so refined and graceful. just glides across your taste receptors. Tannins are nearly resolved, great acidity remains, ready to drink but I predict may still improve for 7-8 more years yet!

Now entering its early drinking window, the 2004 Rennina exudes a captivating earthy nose wet tiled soil, leather, truffle, shitake mushroom and sweet sour cherries. The palate features a beautiful alignment of sweet cherry fruit and savoury earthy nuance with excellent minerality and a firm tannin spine. The acidity is still holding strong, and the midpalate is broad and rich with flavor. I'd imagine this will continue to improve for 7-8 years yet, and drink well through 15 to come.
