Château La Tour Carnet Meritage 2005

A.C., Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux, France
2905 days ago

Alex & Priya scored this wine: 92/100

Alex: The 2005 La tour Carnet has aged with grace, sporting a complex nose that has entered the secondary realm of soy, mushroom and forest floor, amongst sweetened cassis, plum jam and a light cocoa dusting. Elegant and poised on the palate, it weaves a waltz of sweet dark fruit and earth. Pretty balance of acids and still with some tannic friction, this has entered its prime drinking window, and represents well the fairly priced camp of Bordeaux. 92pts

Solutré Pouilly-Fuissé 2013

Alex & Priya scored this wine: 89/100

Priya: Quite a bit of lemon and tanginess here, even though the wine is quite full and deeply colored. Very dry and fresh as well. Delicious! 89pts Alex: A solid Pouilly-Fuisse is this, loaded with golden delicious apples, suggestions of brazilnut and well-used oak treatment - lending a vanilla bean and butterscotch hint that doesn't take away from the rest. Good acidity on the palate, with the fruit compact and round. A juicy mouthful that will please just about everyone. Pair with pork tenderloin a la apple! 89pts

Priya: Barely any color on this wine - super light with a slightly green tinge. It's super tart and full of lemon. This is beyond my amateur appreciation skills...88pts Alex: This is indeed tough for many to assess - for one it's way too young. The nose is very pure with saline touches, thyme and apple blossom, sweet lime and cheese rind with a slight touch of vanilla - while this can be found you must search as it's quite closed. This wine right now is all about the palate - perfect harmony, a subtle, caressing texture yet oozing density and power. It is an elegant grand cru for sure, and with minimal winemaking apparent. I love the finesse as the powerful mid-palate swims effortlessly into a sweeping finish of seapray, limestone and the freshest of lime. A regal effort, that's not in your face but chock full of substance. Lay down for 8-10 years, decant or enjoy the following day. 93pts

Vieilles Vignes, Les Vénérables

La Chablisienne Vieilles Vignes, Les Vénérables Chardonnay 2013

Chablis, Burgundy, France

Priya: Smells like fragrant baby's breath and salty ocean breeze. Nice salty taste with a hint of lemon. Long-lasting too. 89pts Alex: Certainly agree with your description my lady! For sure there is an intensity to the white flowers all over the nose, and fruit is amped up as well for me drawing thoughts of lime and cactus drizzled with sea salt. This drop is squeaky clean through and through, focusing solely on the expression of soil and old vine fruit. A definite buy at $24.95, a worthwhile cut above the entry-level. 91pts

Butteaux

Jean-Marc Brocard Butteaux Chablis 2014

Burgundy A.C., France

Alex & Priya scored this wine: 90/100

Priya: Lots of legs on this, and it's super tangy and lemony. I'm glad I tried it, but at $46 it's a bit too pricey for me. 88pts Alex: This is a very pure, mineral-driven expression of 1er cru Chablis that's quite closed the first day, on both the palate and nose. Give it time...as by day 2 it is soaring! The nose is now riveting with intense white lilac florals, a yeasty sourdough note, and pristine lime and granny smith apple fruit. It's all encapsulated by an ocean seashell presence, that fills the mouth with electric energy on the palate. The palate seemed to have doubled its flavor content the next day, delighting with its purity and verve. A long saline finish gives the length and depth for a fine bowl of ceviche. Be patient with this, as it becomes excellent. Cellar for another 5-7 years or decant. 92pts
