Michel scored this wine: 91/100
When one mentions Beaujolais and the Gamay grape, the first thing that comes to many people's minds is the light, quaffable confected Beaujolais Nouveaux. Well this wine is miles away from that and a serious wine in every way. One of the ten Beaujolais Crus, Juliénas is know for its strong spicy-fruity scented wines, silky mouthfeels and a strong backbone. With the average age of the plots selected for this cuvée being 45 years, I knew I'd be in for a serious Beaujolais treat!
The wine in colour has a med intensity ruby core fading slightly to a pinkish rim with med fast forming legs.
On the nose, aromas of cherries, raspberries, and blackberries leap out of the glass, framed by a subtle cinnamon and sweet baking spice. The violet floral aromas and sweet smoky cedar-oak round off this terrific nose.
On the palate, this rich med-full bodied wine exhibits aromas of cherries, raspberries and blackberries resonating with that cinnamon note for a silky mouthfeel. A surprising amount of fine grained tannins persist, providing excellent structure. Peppery notes linger with that smoky oak riding out for a med long finish.
An excellent quality wine, especially given its $20 price tag. Drink now but honestly this wine can go another year.
Foodwise, this wine would sing with Coffee Encrusted Venison, game meats or strong cheeses.
Throw it in the fridge for 6-8 minutes for optimal drinking temperature.
This my friends is Beaujolais at its finest! Fun yet deliciously serious ! Grab one now if you can!!!
