Easton Zinfandel 2011

Zinfandel is one of my all time faves when it comes to barbeque season, and nobody makes them much better than Easton Vineyards in Amador County, California. This one has everything you want in a zin, and it's affordable: deeply colored, opaque with purple glints, densely packed nose of blueberry compote and blackberry jam with a nudge of black pepper and tea spice; the palate is rich, velvety and textured, like biting into the middle of a jam-packed confection. Cardamom and rooibos tea notes round out the finish, which echos with lingering creaminess offered by barrel aging in new wood (French), along with black berry and black cherry fruit and elegant oak tannins. Enjoy this with saucy ribs, burgers, grilled eggplant or medium spicy middle eastern flavors. don't skimp on flavor though, as it's a powerful wine which could easily overshadow subtle flavors like braised pork or lightly grilled fish. Or have it all on its own, like I often do: Easton Amador Zin + 'You' = Awesome Remember though, Zinfandel is best in its youth: if you're going to hold some back, it will reach its peak by 2016.

Lots of dark blue fruit here, fruitcake comes to mind, brandied cherries and all. A bit nutty, hints of walnut shell nd chestnuts. Fabulous grip, giving support to the opulent fruits. Yes please.

Irresistible nose of honeyed lemon and chamomile flowers, with classic lemon drop, clover honey and a hint of litchi fruit on the mid palate. Zesty and fresh with a slight residual tingle, solid finish echoes the mid palate and more citrus. Excellent with pakoras, fish and chips, abalone fritters ... Yeah, you heard me ...

Lovely dark and fresh fruit flavors like a mouthful of creamy juicy blackberry pie. A note of licorice, lifted and reductive flavors that are almost balsamic in concentration. Ripe blueberry compote underpinning the sweetness of berries at their peak, elegant mouthfeel and finishes well with soft tannins and loads of dark dried fruit.

Lifted florals and violet on the nose, with brambly and cedar notes. Soft on the mid with plenty of red bush vine fruit. Smoky notes and oh so subtle oak nuances of vanilla and toast. excellent balance, finishes medium with a solid berry fruit profile through to the end. Grilled duck, cold foie gras terrine, peppercorn pate, roast turkey.
