Pauillac

Château Haut-Bages-Libéral Pauillac 2001

Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Pam scored this wine: 96/100

Twenty years in the bottle and it is still brimming with fresh red and black fruit. Dark and inky to the rim, it hides its age. Classic cassis, raspberries, plum, cedar, vanilla and spice are released in a swirl. Velvety and full bodied, the tanins are fine and give the wine elegant structure. The palate reveals fresh cassis, blackberry, black cherry and plum with spices of pepper and a bit of clove. The more swirls the more tertiary earthy and leather notes with a touch of green pepper emerge. The acidity is balanced and the long luxurious finish adds to the complexity of this fine Bordeaux.

Bright red fruit on the nose 20 years later show the freshness and longevity of this wine. Deep ruby in the core with a garnet edge. Cassis, cherry, tobacco leaf, leather and vanilla on the nose. The wine evolves with every swirl with more complexity a d tertiary earthy notes. The palate is fresh with the same flavours as the nose, highlighting cassis, leather, some herbaceous notes and a bit of mushroom. The rich full bodied wine has silky tannins and a dry finish. Balanced acidity carries a long finish. Devine!

Fabulous deep inky purple after 19 years! Beautiful and still fruit forward with fresh blackberry, cassis, licorice, spice and a hint of eucalyptus all without being overly jammy. The palate delivers dense concentration with integrated fruit and tertiary flavours of dark berries, liquorice, leather, spice, soft tannins and enough acidity to make it food friendly despite the 15% alcohol level. Long, smooth, dry and juicy finish with a bit of heat.

The deep bright ruby to the rim doesn’t give away the 15 yrs of ageing. The nose is bright and fruit forward with no oxidation. Red berry fruit integrating with leather and mushrooms go from the nose to the palate. As Pommard is a fuller bodied Burgundy, this lives up to more tannin. Still smooth with good acidic balance and a long finish with cranberry, leather and smoke. This could age even longer, to my surprise. Was a great match with Mushroom Barley Risotto. Would be fantastic with duck or lamb.

Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs

Delicate pale gold with tiny fine bubbles emanating from the glass. Elegant and persistent but very fine and tiny bubbles that lead to a delicate effervescence. On the nose there are light citrus and floral notes giving way to minerality. The autolytic aromas of brioche and bread are benchmarks of Blanc de Blancs. The palate was silky and elegant with delicate floral, citrus and a hint of green apple. Lovely balanced acidity with a long finish. Truly a celebratory Champagne.
