From a good vintage, San Pedro 1865 2021 is a great value Maule Valley Carmenère at $20. Dry, medium-bodied and fragrant with dark plum, cherry, dried grilled herbs, white pepper and green leafy/bell pepper notes fresh on the palate. Very tasty, enjoy it with sirloin steaks from the grill. Delicious now or hold to 2026.

Carmenère food pairings: venison, ratatouille, rabbit stew, bison steaks.

Reviews and Ratings

Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

San Pedro's 1865 Selected Vineyards Carmenère is produced in Chile's Colchagua Valley, with influences from the Andes, Coastal Mountains, volcanic soils, and Mediterranean climate, it’s here where Chile’s signature varietal shines, benefiting from the warm days to ripen the grapes while the cool nights preserve the refreshing and spicy characteristics Carmenère is renowned for.

Las Lagunas Carménère 2021 shows textbook Chilean Carmenère characteristics with blackberry, raspberry, green peppercorn, spice, and graphite minerality on the nose. Repeat on the palate with dark berries, green peppercorn spice and herbal notes persisting on the long and lightly textured finish. Enjoy this super value priced wine now and over the next few years with roasted rack of lamb and mint-basil pesto or grilled NY strip with salsa verde. Tasted November 2023. 90 points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Aromas of cherry, dark plum, and raspberry, with a hint of stony granite. Medium bodied, medium acidity, smooth tannins, on the palate, with deep black fruit flavours, along with a touch of dried herb hints and even a bit of black pepper. Enjoy with prime rib and roasted root vegetables.
