Winemaker Joel Peterson says that "airoir" affects the taste of this wine. The vineyards are planted close to eucalyptus trees and the oil from the trees blows off and coats the grapes lightly imparting a light hint of mint. This wine displays dazzling aromas of ripe red berries and other fruits. It was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, of which 30% was new. The barrels are made from oak primarily from the Navarre forest in France, and they are seasoned outside where the weather impact their final flavour profile and brings out their natural wood-grain tannins. Joel uses hand/manual punch down to extract more flavour.

Zinfandel food pairings: roast pork shoulder with cranberry Zinfandel wine sauce, roast chicken, red berry compote over baked brie.

Reviews and Ratings

Jon Steeves - Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Beautiful, bountiful, deeply concentrated, dense, full-bodied. Well balanced big fruit, medium tannins, medium plus alcohol integrating nicely. Great execution considering the declared 14.9% ABV. Big ripe red berries, bold raspberry jam, delicate French oak influence. This wine paired exceptionally well with chimichurri steak and grilled veggies. Would pair well with ribs likewise. Drinking well on its own. A crowd pleaser guaranteed and patio season friendly. Tasted May 2017. 92 points. BespokeTastings
Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Intense, fragrant minty-eucalyptus, anise, black plum, cassis and graphite minerality upfront with delectable flavours of Australian black licorice, plum and baking spice. The palate is full-bodied and silky smooth with a long black fruit and anise finish. Enjoy with bbq beef kebabs. Tasted May 2017 / bespoketatsings.ca
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Tasted in 2021 and there is so much life in this wine. Aromas of raspberry, ripe cherry, eucalyputus, black pepper, leather and smoke are bursting out of the glass. Full bodied, ripe and vibrant, with medium+ acidity, ripe, rounded red and black berry notes, and a hint of spice and smoke on the finish. Enjoy with any grilled meats.
Since starting the Ravenswood winery in Sonoma County in 1976, Joel Peterson has amassed enormous critical acclaim, a dedicated cult following and has even been nicknamed the Grandfather of Zinfandel. Ravenswood's Dickerson Single Vineyard (2013) is planted close to eucalyptus trees and the oil from the trees blows off and coats the grapes lightly imparting a light hint of mint. Winemaker, Joel Peterson says that the effect this has on the Zinfandel is called "airoir". Pretty Clever. The 100% Zin is fresh, red berries and cherries, and the wine is aged in Navarre French oak barrels for over 10 months, 30% new barrels. - Community Wine Reviews
