This turbo-charged red wine is made from Primitivo grapes, aka Zinfandel. The fruit is blackened and charred with lots and lots of toasty oak. Finishes with mocha and oak. Great with BBQ or grilled meats.

Primitivo Di Manduria food pairings: three-sausage pizza, charcuterie, sausage cassoulet.

Reviews and Ratings

Tania Thomas - CSW, WSET ADV rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

A fantastic offering from the Apulian winery Varvaglione 1921. This Primitivo di Manduria DOP, their flagship wine, is considered to be one of “The 2017 Best Italian Wines”. Plush, smooth and concentrated with a ton of dark berry fruit, prunes and raisons. Well rounded tannins and great structure. Dark chocolate notes emerging on the lingering finish. A given as a pairing with game roast and grilled meats. Score: 93/100. Tasted April 2017. Tania Thomas – www.runawaygrape.com
Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

In a word - Delicious! Lots of baked summer berries that will remind you of Bumbleberry Pie cooing on a window ledge. You will try and sip this wine but your nose will tell you that you want to bite into it. Warm baking spices, chocolate, coffee and toasted oak. Smooth and just enough acidity to match the full-on baked fruit. Wins points for value and readiness in my book. California Zinfandel lovers need to try this original. Pair with meat lovers pizza; lamb and game; meaty pasta sauce.
Tasted: April 2017
This Primitivo is bursting with black fruit and spice. This full-throttle Italian red wine won a Gold Medal at the Mundus Vini competition in 2012. Try it with charred steak.
