Vintages Wine Panel: Catena’s Alamos Malbec is always a fine ambassador for Argentina’s signature grape. Be prepared for a rich, full-bodied wine with concentrated fruit flavours of raspberry and cassis blessed with heavenly doses of chocolate and sweet spice from the light oak ageing. My note: A pleasant sipper with lovely blackberry aromas. Medium- to full-bodied and smooth. A solidly made wine with terrific balance. Ripe blackberries and pepper. Perfect for barbecue and movie night.

Malbec food pairings: lasagna.

Reviews and Ratings

Reverse Wine Snob reviewed this wine as follows:

This is a dry, thin, below average Malbec. We found it be a bit sour and are somewhat mystified about the popularity of this one. Luckily we drank it while watching a really good movie (Secretariat) so all was not lost. Because we were able to get this one for only $7.99 it will just barely get a Second Chance rating, but if you have to spend more than that, our advice would be to Skip It.

This robust young red wine from Argentina offers excellent quality for the price, and it’s oroduced in quantities that should assure wide distribution. It offers juicy flavors of blackberry and blueberry, and a rounded, smooth texture. It’s not enormously complex, but it has a friendly approachability that would make it perfect for [a winter] barbecue. Source: Michael Dresser, The Baltimore Sun
