A spectacular red wine in every dimension: complexity, concentration of flavour, layering, and length of finish. The power and intensity is here but not any heaviness or extraction of harsh flavour or tannin. This robust red wine Australian blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec grapes. The 1998 vintage of this wine won Australia's most coveted wine award, Jimmy Watson Trophy. This is a cellar-worthy wine, but it will also drink well now. Highly recommended.

Food pairings: beef fajitas, roast beef, roast goose, lamb shanks.

Reviews and Ratings

Mary Anne van Gaal rated this wine as 96/100 with the following review:

This deep red juicy blend has both spicy and fruity notes. Smooth on the tongue, flavours of plum and oak linger. This dry premium wine features the best varieties of the vintage. It would be stellar paired with red meat or tomato based Italian dishes.
Lori Kilmartin WSET3 - WSET3 Sommelier rated this wine as 96/100 with the following review:

Chief Winemaker at Wolf Blass Chris Hatcher compared this to a Ferrari and I have to say I agree. Lots of dark fruit, tobacco, cigar, smoke and leather. Chewy tannins with a good balance of acidity. This blend of Cab Sauv., Shiraz and Malbec makes a wine that is multi-layered both on the nose and the palate. It has a long smoky finish that keeps you wanting more. I drank it paired with a rare steak and would say it was a match made in heaven!
Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

Wolf Blass' 38th vintage of their Black Label (Cab/Shiraz blend) had one thing in common with all previous vintages, another resounding success! Chief Winemaker Chis Hatcher "Hatch" notes that there's no recipe to producing their Black Label Cab/Shiraz blend, other than careful selection of the finest barrel samples which get blended together to produce their top grade Black Label. And fine it is! The proof is in the bottle. Incredible complexity, great fruit concentration, with a lovely mouthfeel that shows the wine's refinement and elegance. My first impression was of fresh baked blueberry muffins cooked on a charcoal grill...which is something I must try after enjoying this outstanding wine. A terrific wine for any serious collector, and for those that aren't quite as patient, not to worry, it's drinking beautifully now, so why wait! Tasted March 2015. 94 points. Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

Tremendous complexity! Tip of the hat to - not just the wine maker - but the very gifted palates of the Wolf Blass wine blenders who picked only the best juice of an excellent vintage to craft this beauty. No one character is overpowering, they all just harmoniously come together into this well crafted rounded red wine. Key flavours that jump at me are: fresh black berry fruit, dried dates, anise (more fennel bulb than anise actually), vanilla, new leather and hints of black pepper. Nice tannins (still grippy), big body, and a long lusciously smooth finish. Ever feel like spoiling yourself from time to time? Go for this beauty of a wine!
Donna Hargrove rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

The price point on this Cabernet/Shiraz blend is indicative of the experience that went into the formula behind this delicious wine. The winemakers at Wolf Blass are to be commended! Bold yet smooth, hints of blackberry and vanilla, absolutely nothing about this wine is overpowering. All flavours blend perfectly for a long smooth finish. This is a very special wine that would be perfect for a special celebration! Tasted March 3, 2015
Douglas McMillan rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Inky blackberry, cigar box, leather, blueberry, black pepper, licorice, and more. This wine is big, but is all about balance and elegance and the aromas and taste show that nicely. The blackberry and blueberry are luscious and juicy with a beautiful satin mouth feel. Some solid tannins add structure and everything hold together perfectly. The juicy fruit and tannin in the finish seem to go on forever. I'd want to pair this with a very carefully prepared special meal for fear of taking away from the wine. This is a wine made for drinking.
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

A special wine ideally suited to a special occasion. This wine is blended from the best Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines of the vintage. Intense aromas of blackberry, cassis, blueberry, black pepper, and leather. Full bodied, beautiful balanced acidity and flavours of blackberry, pepper and a hint of spice. A long, lingering finish. Beautiful. This is a wine I want to savour on its own and enjoy every sip.
Nick Onischuk - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

The Wolf Blass Black Label 2010 is a stunning blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. This very smooth wine features aromas and flavours of cassis, blackberry, blueberry, vanilla and spice. This must try wine can be enjoyed on its own or with your favourite red meat dish. Tasted March 3, 2015 (93/100)
Sean O'Regan - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

March 3, 2015: Assembled from the best batches of Cabernet and Shiraz along with a finish ferment in barrel for extra depth, this is in the top tear of the Wolf Blass offereings. Deep ruby, with cassis, blackberry, cedar, graphite, mineral and herb/menthol on the nose. The quality here is evident as it hits the palate with focus, energy and intensity. Cassis, blackberry, pepper and herb/menthol dominate with great concentration and extraction and purity of fruit. It would be interesting to follow this wine every year over the next decade+ if your wallet permits. The wine rips through a rare striploin steak. 92+
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

One of my favourite childhood memories is of the day I picked so many blackberries that my mother made a pie with them. This wine reminds me of that pie...opaque dark purple-ruby in colour, like the berry stains on my hands(and clothes!) with a subdued, elegant nose of ripe berries. A velvety palate tastes like the juicy sweet pie itself, with a very smooth, satiny mouthfeel blending into a long ripe berry finish.
A terrific gift wine to keep in mind for a special occasion.
Dan Carkner reviewed this wine as follows:

A rare treat for some or an everyday wine for friends I wish I had, this top notch cabernet sauvignon-shiraz blend has a bouquet that reveals itself slowly and something new is found each time you visit the glass. Stewed plum, perfumed cherry, smoked red pepper, high cocoa chocolate, licorice, cigar box, and new leather define the nose that requires adjectives to accompany each element detected.
The fruit on the palate shows a dried character as well as fresh berries and macerated cherry. Oak influences such as cigar box, leather and vanilla are some but not all of the intrigue when tasting this wine.
Big, smooth, and sexy, this wine features silky tannins, a medium full body, and medium high acidity to match.
The Black Label finishes long with dark berries, tart cherry, cigar box, leather and cocoa.
A wine to be savoured and one that will surely spur conversation, be sure not to invite too many to share it. You'll want plenty to go around.
