From the Niagara wine region, The Foreign Affair's Dream 2016 is a juicy, succulent, full-bodied red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grapes, 15% of which are dried for four months in appassimento style prior to fermentation. The final blend was aged in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels for one year. Ripe dark cherries, blackberry, fruit cake and sweet tobacco flavours fill the palate. Tannins are firm. Cellar for three years or decant and pour with smoky ribs.

Food pairings: smoky game burgers, beef steak, rack of lamb, smoked cheeses.

Reviews and Ratings

Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A Bordeaux-style blend made of 45% Merlot, 34% Cab Sauv, 15% Cab Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot. On the nose, dark berry and plum aromas along with violet, cinnamon, cedar, and a touch of vanilla bean.

On the palate, blueberry, blackcurrant, and plum flavours with grippy tannins and a long espresso finish.

Tasted at the Taste Ontario event in April 2019.

Wine-Food Pairing: Perfect with barbecued steak.
Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Delicious wine from The Foreign Affair Winery, located in the Niagara Escarpment, the Dream 2016 is partly appassimento, made mainly from Merlot. The wine reveals flavors of cherry, raspberry, chocolate and toffee, and is overall well rounded with a velvety finish. Tasted at Taste Ontario, March 2020.
L.J. Palmer WSET 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Foreign Affair makes their wines using the appassimento technique; this enhances the fruit flavour and enriches and deepens the flavour. This wine is a Merlot dominant blend (45%)with Cabernet Sauvignon (34%), Cabernet Franc (15%) and Petit Verdot. The aroma is rich, deep and fruity and features dark cherries, red plums, black currants, vanilla and a touch of earth. Wonderfully fruity in the mouth with some spice and smoke added. This is a well balanced wine.
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Blended from Merlot (45%), Cabernet Sauvognom (34%), Cabernet Franc (15%), and Petit Verdot (6%). Rich and smooth, 17% of the grapes are dried appassimento style contributing to rich flavours on the palate. Aromas of black cherry, plum, cedar and a hint of vanilla. Full bodied and luscious on the palate with rich fruit, smoky, tobacco notes and a lengthy finish.
Paula Bernardino rated this wine as 87/100 with the following review:

I discovered this winery at the Taste Ontario event in Ottawa April 3, 2019 and really like their labels and the names of the their wines. Their Dream red is a combination of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. I would pair it with grilled white meats.
The Foreign Affair's Dream 2016 is a juicy, succulent, full-bodied Niagara red wine blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grapes. About 15% of wine grapes were dried for four months in appassimento style and the fermented wine spent over a year in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels. Lush layers of dried fruit, ripe dark cherries, blackberry, cake spice and dried tobacco leaf fill the palate. Tannins are firm. Cellar for three years or decant and pour with a dark chocolate mousse or chicken mole. - Community Wine Reviews
