Reviews and Ratings

Andrew Bernardo rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A lovely Coonawarra Cab with lots of ripe cherry and creme de cassis notes. There’s sweet earth, mint, eucalyptus and sagebrush notes that linger on the palate and the finish. After 30 minutes in the glass it develops what’s reminiscent of blood orange peel and camphor. It’s utterly fascinating and underpriced for what it is. Drink now through 2027. 91 Points.
Carolyn Hetke rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This Cabernet Sauvignon has subtle fruit on the nose offset with eucalyptus and a bit of damp earthiness. The palate is appealing with lots of dark fruit. It is full-bodied and well balanced, perhaps a bit hot on the long finish. Tannins are grippy. This is a perfect accompaniment to steaks and earthy mushroom dishes. Excellent value. Tasted June 2019. www.thewineloverskitchen.com
Daniel O'Keefe rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Captivating and delightful nose of mint meltaways, menthol, cocoa, blackcurrant, fresh black cherry, and plum. Firmly tannic with bright acids and a generous full body. Coonawarra is a bit of a cool pocket, so some mild herbaceous notes are expected and enjoyed. The green bell pepper is a bit overpowering on the palate and finish in this otherwise top notch wine. Good deal at $19.95. Lamb chops with mint jelly all the way.
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

Aromas of ripe red berries, dried herbs, along with some woodsy notes and a bit of leather. Full bodied with dusty tannins, and a bit of heat on the finish! Enjoy with grilled beef tenderloin.
From the Coonawarra, Penley Estate Phoenix 2016 is a rich and fleshy Cabernet Sauvignon with dark plum, ripe blackberry and dried savoury herb, mint and sweet tobacco leaf flavours on the palate finishing long and intense. Great value under $20. Enjoy now and for the next 10 years. - Community Wine Reviews
