Robust and tannic red wine blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from southwestern Ontario. Needs some cellar time (2010 was a good vintage) and decant one hour. Try it with prime rib.

Meritage food pairings: tender cut of prime rib.

Reviews and Ratings

Chris Coughlin - WSET level 3 grad rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Good example of what sort of wines can be made in the Ontario climate. With aromas and flavours of: raspberry, blackberry, tabacco and some white pepper this Meritage from Pelee Island will not disappoint.
Douglas McMillan rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Lots of wine-makers aromas here; cigar box, leather, vanilla, herbs and spices as well as black cherry. The taste is cherry and vanilla with some soft tannins and a long cherry and spice finish. An excellent wine with roast beef.
Kristin Perrin rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

Red currant / raspberries / savory herbs / earthy / medium body and soft tannins

Meatloaf! Not the singer!
Courtney Flood rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

Very distinct oak barrel notes on this meritage blend. There is rich berry aromas and flavours with a lift of eucalytus and the smokey-vanilla finish from toasty oak barrel. Silky. Would go well with tender beef tenderloin medallions.
Craig Kuziemsky rated this wine as 87/100 with the following review:

Red fruit and oak on the nose. Flavors of raspberry, red currant, earth, dill and tobacco.
Tania Thomas - CSW, WSET ADV rated this wine as 87/100 with the following review:

This delicious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc comes from Canada’s southernmost point of Pelee Island. The island’s unique microclimate with a few frost days and plenty of sunshine year round allows for full ripening of these Bordeaux varietals. Full bodied, rich and juicy, it is bursting with aromas and flavours of black raspberries and blackcurrants. Great structure and bold tannins, just starting to soften. Hints of tobacco and chocolate on a long lingering finish. Excellent paired with grilled beef or lamb.
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

A clear garnet red wine with aromas of cedar and red berries. The palate give blueberries and tobacco flavours. Medium-bodied.
Great to serve with beef stir-fry.
This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc offers up ripe raspberry, currants, tobacco and a sprinkle of cocoa powder. Nice depth and concentration, with a medium-full body and ripe, chewy tannins. Touch of dried cranberry on the finish. Source: Vintages Wine Panel, Nov. 2012
The Vinedressers
In 1891 , Captain J.S Hamilton, the president of Pelee Island Wine Company and J.S Hamilton & Co., Began construction of a three story building with the tone being quarried from the island. Named the Wine House, it was located on five acres of land near the West dock on Pelee Island. The press was located on the third floor and the juice was channeled to the five thousand litre oak casks in the cellar of the Wine House.

With Vin Villa Vineyards (1865) already well established. and along with the Wine House, the new century began with a strong winemaking spirit on the island.

This wine will continue the tradition of excellence which began with the "Vinedressers" of Pelee Island Winery, to shine into the next millennium.

This wine is aged for 16 months in French and Hungarian barrique barrels.

Wine Description
This Meritage is a classical blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Aged for 16 months in French and Hungarian barrique barrels, this is a full bodied wine with a lot of character.

Wine Maker’s Notes:
While strolling through the vineyards taking a look at the progress of our grapes, we decided that it was high time to add another premium brand to our line of Vinedresser Series wines. Seeing as we had enough matured fruit on vines that had been planted for fifteen years or so, we hand selected the grapes and came up with a wonderful blend idea.
We would try our hand at a Bordeleaux blend known widely as Meritage. This vintage has excellent aging potential that we expect will continue well beyond 2006.

Food Recommendations
One sip of this wine and you’ll see why it deserves such a prestigious
name. A wine this rich and flavourful would be excellent served at room temperature with tender cut of prime rib or all on its own.

Additional Information
Years ago, in an international contest to name the distinct blend of “Meritage,” the name was chosen as a word that combined “merit” and “heritage” to reflect the spirit of the members of The Meritage Association.
