Reviews and Ratings
Luc Delorme rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review: Slightly closed on the nose at first, the dried, stewed fruit typical to Amarone presents itself nicely after some time to breathe. Warming and packing a significant tannic punch, this Amarone stimulates the palate more than it does the nose. Wonderful flavours of ripe, stewed berries, with some spice notes. This Masi is not as heavy as as some Amarones, but is wonderfully balanced with a lingering ripe, almost candied fruit finish. This is the wine to bring out with the prime rib for a celebratory dinner.
Greg Hughes rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review: Pretty laid back for an Amarone backed up by 15.5% alcohol. It still manages a balanced ripeness and fruit show through nice and clean. Masi is basically a byword when it comes to Veneto and its reds. Deep ruby with slight bricking colours towards the edges. What a delightful example of Amarone. Gushy red and black fruit leap out at you, though when first opened, there is some firm smokey chestnut aromas and some dried tobacco rusticity. Flavours of cassis, chocolate, cranberry, oven dried tomato, vanilla, red plum, and blackberry. The flavours of the oak ar tastefully restrained. Make no mistake, Amarones are generally imposing, but this one is very polished. Tons of structure and primary fruit. This wine could age significantly, though it has a few years under its belt already. Unlike many other long term cellaring Amarones, it is drinking just fine at the moment.
Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review: Iconic Valpolicella winery, Masi, continues to produce some of the most sought after and approachable wines in the world. Their Riserva Costasera Amarone uses Oseleta grapes to complement the traditional blends of Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, thereby giving it even more body and complexity. Rich and complex, this Amarone shows sweet dried fruits, stewed cherry, baking spice, and plum. Stewed dark fruit, plum, and tangy spice on the textured palate. A great dose of tannins show up on the mid palate making this a terrific cellar candidate and ideal with braised beef dishes. Tasted November 2016. 92 points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca
Nick Onischuk - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review: The Masi Costasera Riserva Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2009 is a wine for amarone lovers. Beautiful dark berry fruit and spice. Nice smooth finish! Tasted November 2016 (90/100)
Emilie Ryan rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review: Presentation: Classic Masi style, stately Appearance: Deep, ruby with a touch of garnet (orange on the edges) colour Nose: Pronounced intensity aromas of black and cooked fruit (raisins, cherries), smoke and hickory, grilled meat Taste: Dry, full bodied, high acidity, high tannins, with dried, dark fruit (raisins), leather, earth, meat, and cedar Finish: Long finish with raisins, leather, Overall impression: A very good Amarone. This big wine needs big, flavourful food. Value: 2.5/5
Bill Wright Sommelier reviewed this wine as follows: Lovely medium body dark fruit, smoke, toast and vanilla. Sour, smoky finish lingers and lingers. Amarone as it is supposed to be
Masi is a well-known name in Italian wine circles, and the decadents of the poet Dante Algheri have made wine for generations. Blackberry liqueur aromas and dried figs. - Community Wine Reviews
