Another great vintage for this cool-climate gamay! I love the description on the back label for the vineyard where the Gamay grapes for this lovely Niagara wine are grown: "On the very end of the plateau known as the Beamsville Bench, there's a clearing surrounded by an old-growth forest, untouched by all who farmed the land since the War of 1812." Doesn't this sound like the beginning of a great storybook adventure? It continues: "We call it the Courtney Vineyard after the wonderful woman who lived nearby. She called it paradise. The trees she loved now stand sentinel, protecting one of Malivoire's most coveted vineyards." Malivoire is truly the Canadian master of Gamay. Luscious, rich and flavourful without being heavy. Lots of black and dark red berry fruits. Some smoke on the finish. This wine enjoys extended barrel-aging in French oak, yet there is no pronounced oaky aroma or flavour. Pair with grilled seafood or pheasant.

Gamay food pairings: roasted suckling pig, roast lamb, veal stew.

Reviews and Ratings

Wineboy rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Wow !! This is a hefty price for a Gamay, let alone an Ontario Gamay - but it's worth it. Aromas have a beautiful purity of candied fruit. Ample fruit on the palate in a straightforward manner. The true beauty comes with a soft spicy note that gives this Gamay a complexity many lack.
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

I personally love Ontario Gamay, and this is such a wonderful example! Aromas of cherry, blackberry, pepper, smoke and cedar. Medium bodied, smooth and supple texture, with bright acidity. Smoke and pepper mingle nicely with those rich berry flavours on the palate, and you also get a hint of warm vanilla on the finish. So delicious! Gamay is so versatile - you could pair this with almost anything - chicken, pork, beef, grilled fish, pasta with rich tomato sauces, or grilled veggies with a balsamic glaze. Enjoy!!
Lynn van der Linde - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Red raspberries, vanilla, and a hint of eucalyptus swirl in the glass. Soft mouth, with flavours of cherries on the finish.
Perfect with burgers!
Tasted July 2018.
Malvoire Courtney 2016 is a great vintage cool-climate Gamay from the Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment wine region. Up to 30% of the fruit is whole bunch pressed. Fairly dripping with ripe black cherry, red berries, cherries, earthy and spicy flavours on the palate, this is a beautifully complex Gamay, yes, Gamay with good acidity to fruit balance finishing lush and long. Drink now or cellar for three years. Pair with grilled Hangar steak. - Community Wine Reviews
