Big and oaky with lots of mocha and espresso, but I like it! It’s warm and fleshy and generous like a pair of jeans that fits just right. Aromas of ripe blackberries and voluptuous plums. So smooth. Top me up! Diemersfontein Pinotage is part of he cult-coffee style wines all the rage. They are the toast of a gathering each year in Wellington, Western Cape, with the Pinotage On Tap festival. Pair with coffee-rubbed steak.

Pinotage food pairings: coffee-rubbed beef, meat topped pizza, blackened lamb burgers, quail, smoked cheese.

Reviews and Ratings

Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

The original 'coffee' Pinotage. This in its 13th vintage, shows that textbook mocha characteristic. The palate is smooth and refershing with lovely mocha flavours (picture coffee icecream flavour, but in a dry and food friendly style). Very nice Pinotage! 91 points. Tasted March 2015. Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Would you like a little wine with your coffee? This red wine is considered the original coffee Pinotage and many have tried to duplicate it's success. This signature South African varietal has it's lovers and it's haters. I loved this Pinotage. The aromas are intense espresso, mocha, smoke, dark cherry. The palate is a full-on coffee experience. Long mocha finish. Meant to be enjoyed now. Enjoy this with a coffee rubbed BBQ steak or on it's own. Afterall, it's 12 O'clock somewhere.

Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Yummy mocha/coffee nose with a palate showing strong mocha, dark red fruits and spice. Dry with a long coffee finish.
The 2013 vintage of the Diemersfontein Pinotage is the thirteenth vintage of this South African red wine. This wine won double gold at the China Wine & Spirits Awards. This red wine is said to be the first coffee-style pinotage. The winery makes 40,000 cases (of 12 bottles each). - Community Wine Reviews
