Still a phenomenal value Bordeaux red. Smoky cherry, plummy, raspberry and cranberry aromas. Tart cherry, grippy tannins with good acidity for food. Vrai Caillou estate has belonged to the Pommier family since 1863. Most of the grape vines are over 45 year of age.

Food pairings: grilled New York striploin steak done rare, roast chicken, tourtière.

Reviews and Ratings

Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

Chateau Vrai Caillou 2016, from the Entre Deux Mers AOC Region of Bordeaux, offers a great day-to-day wine quality. Warms aromas of dark cherry, dark skin plum, menthol, cola, caramel and sandalwood. Made from 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc, Chateau Vrai Caillou delivers a light body for a Bordeaux wine, but compensates with delicious flavors of cherry, rip plum, bay leaf, leather and sandalwood. Enjoy.
Carolyn Hetke rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

50% Merlot/20% Cabernet Sauvignon/30% Cabernet Franc, this Bordeaux blend opens with an interesting nose of brambleberry and violets and some spicy notes. The palate shows restrained fruit with herbal highlight of thyme and a hint of cedar. Pair with Mushroom Fricasée or French onion soup. Good value. Tasted January 2020. www.thewineloverskitchen.com
Linda Mertes WSET 2 rated this wine as 85/100 with the following review:

A Bordeaux blend from Entre deux Mers, and Merlot led, the wine presents medium garnet in the glass. Red berry and red fruit aromas, this medium-bodied wine has medium acidity and high tannins. Decant or age further. Pair with lamb or beef.
Tasted January 2020.
Château Vrai Caillou 2016 Supérieur is amazing value under $16. A tasty and inexpensive Bordeaux blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc from grape vines that average 45 years of age. Bright ruby in the glass with violet hues with aromas of black plum, currant, savoury herbs and smoky on the nose. Bright red plum, cherry, red berry and earthy, meaty and spice flavours on the palate. Tannins are velvety, and nice acidity to go along with roast beef and lamb stews. Well done! The Vrai Caillou estate has been in the Pommier family since 1863. Christel and Philippe de Meillac have overseen winery operations since 2013 and the 90-hectare estate planted in Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with 25 hectares planted in Sauvignon and Semillon. - Community Wine Reviews
