Natalie's Score: 91/100

From Bodegas Esmeralda in Argentina, the grapes for the 2014 vintage of this Cabernet Sauvignon from Catena Alta are from vineyards planted over 1000 metres above sea-level that take advantage of the cool nights (and warm days) to fully ripen the wine grapes. The wine was then aged 18 months in new French oak. A many-layered, multi-faceted wine with great complexity and classic aromas of cassis, blackberry, blackcurrant, coffee and wood spice. You'll find my feature story on Catena, and a visit with Nicolas Catena that was part of my second book, Unquenchable.

Cabernet Sauvignon food pairings: barbecued and grilled meats, game, chicken salad, pork tenderloin.

Reviews and Ratings

Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

On the nose, this Cabernet Sauvignon has juicy aromas of blackberries and strawberries, as well as cinnamon, cloves, espresso, dark chocolate, smoke, and vanilla.

On the palate, there is tart blackberries and blackcurrant spread with a touch of earthy beets and espresso. It is full bodied with structured tannins and a long finish. It is well made and very enjoyable.

Tasted February 2018
Produced by Catena Zapata, Catena Alta Historic Rows 2014 is a robust, red blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc with wine grapes sourced from Lot 3 of the La PirĂ¡mide vineyard, Lot 2 of the Domingo vineyard and Lot 2 of the Nicasia Vineyard. Elevage was 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels. Catena Alta Historic Rows Series is an assemblage of historic rows within the Catena family Estate vineyards. Look for dark berry and spicy flavours on the palate wrapped up in mouth-watering acidity. Decant for two hours and pair with bison burgers or a rare rib roast. - Community Wine Reviews
