Reviews and Ratings

Mario Cagnetta rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

Here is a very good deal for Nebbiolo grape lovers. Castello di Neive Barbaresco 2009 has the typical characteristics of this grape that is found in Piedmont and Valtellina (in the north of Lombardy) the best place to grow and be harvested. Its origin dates back to 1300 and its name probably derives from the word “nebbia” that means fog. In Piedmont the best place where Nebbiolo grows is Langhe. Castello di Neive Barbaresco 2009 has a good structure: elegant in the bouquet, it is particularly recommended with mushrooms and truffles, two staples Piedmont’s cuisine in the North West of Italy.
Visual Examination: Crystal clear, with the typical transparency given by the grapes due to the lack of malvidin, this Barbaresco has a garnet red color. It has a good consistency very evident by the arches created after you swirl the glass.
Olfactory Examination: Intense and complex, this wine has a fine quality with a bouquet that starts from the fruity notes, like cherries and goudron, and goes on with nuances of withered flowers, mainly velvets. In the final, the spicy and the hearty notes emerge vigorously and complete the general aroma with a twist of vanilla, pepper and cinnamon.
Taste-olfactory examination: Dry wine with a warm presence of alcohols and polyalcohols. Moderately fresh in the acids, as a traditional Barbaresco it is also tannic. The aging in French barrels for 12 months transmits some vanilla taste very well balanced and not too overwhelming when the wine is in the mouth.
A good quality wine, intense and persistent after you drink it. Full body ready to drink but also good to be aged in the cellar for no more than five years. And above all a very good deal for the price. You must try if you like red.
