A single vineyard, medium-bodied red made with 100% Monastrell wine grapes and just terrific. From the estate El Chaconero in the village of Villena, a plot at 600 metres altitude planted some 25 years ago. Juicy with fresh black cherries, red berries, soft sweet spice, cocoa and toasty flavours finishing zesty and long on the palate. Nicely done. Pair with grilled pork chops.

Monastrell food pairings: roast beef, chicken brochettes, pork chops smothered in wine sauce.

Reviews and Ratings

Craig Haynes - WSET3 FWS SWS IWS rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

From eastern Spain’s Alicante appellation, the 2017 La Tremenda offered a superb experience for fans of fuller bodied - but not oaky – reds.

The show started with lovely ripe berry and cherry aromas lifted by scents evocative of eucalyptus, earthiness and mint. Featuring 100% Monastrell grapes, the performance continued with a lush mouth feel punctuated by spiciness and rich berry flavours, velvety tannins and a lengthy finish. An excellent match for slow cooked stews.

Produced by Bodegas Enrique Mendoza, La Tremenda 2017 is a single vineyard, medium-bodied 100% Monastrell produced from 25-year-old vines. Fresh with dark plum, black cherry, red berry, baking spice, savoury herb and well-integrated toasty oak spice. Fermented in small stainless-steel tanks and matured in French oak barrels for six months. Excellent value under $20. - Community Wine Reviews
