Craig Haynes rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

From eastern Spain’s Alicante appellation, the 2017 La Tremenda offered a superb experience for fans of fuller bodied - but not oaky – reds.

The show started with lovely ripe berry and cherry aromas lifted by scents evocative of eucalyptus, earthiness and mint. Featuring 100% Monastrell grapes, the performance continued with a lush mouth feel punctuated by spiciness and rich berry flavours, velvety tannins and a lengthy finish. An excellent match for slow cooked stews.

Ghislain Lalonde rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

FBS, JS90(5), One of the leading lights in Alicante, Pepe Mendoza has unlocked the secrets to creating balanced, fresh, but still sun-filled expressions of monastrell (aka mourvèdre). Part of secret is high-elevation, precisely-farmed, balanced old vines, in this case 30 year-old plants from the La Tremenda vineyard (some of Mendoza's youngest vines). This 2017 smells lovely, maturing nicely and offering a range of wild Mediterranean herbs alongside ripe dark fruit, blackberry, even blueberry compote, absent new wood influence, just the gentle oxidation afforded by old cask and the savoury complexity that it brings. The texture is smooth and enveloping, but with enough structure and acid to frame up the palate. Excellent length in the price category. A gem of a wine at the price. Tasted August 2020.

Natalie's Review

Bodegas Enrique Mendoza La Tremenda Monastrell 2017, Alicante D.O., Spain: A single vineyard, medium-bodied red made with 100% Monastrell wine grapes and just terrific. From the estate El Chaconero in the village of Villena, a plot at 600 metres altitude planted some 25 years ago. Juicy with fresh black cherries, red berries, soft sweet spice, cocoa and toasty flavours finishing zesty and long on the palate. Nicely done. Pair with grilled pork chops. Drink: 2020-2022. 490011 14% XD 750 mL  $17.95 Score: 89/100. June 11, 2021 Best Value Red Wine. Plush Pork Wine  Full Review
