Black pepper sprinkled on tart dark cherry in this vibrant go-to Gamay from Niagara. Lots of acidity for food. Juicy and medium-bodied and smooth.

Reviews and Ratings

Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

The Sandstone Vineyard at 13th Street Winery was planted in 1983 and located in the warmest appellation of Niagara. Sandy loam and sandstone retain heat and have excellent drainage. This Gamay Noir is very nice. Medium ruby colour with intense aromas of black cherry, plum, black earth, smoke, cedar, smoked meat, pepper. The flavours are earthy ripe. A very good wine from a challenging vintage. Good acidity with youthful tannins.
Winemaker suggests serving slightly chilled at 18C. I would venture serving this with Christmas dinner. Other suggestions: soft cheeses, game meat. Loved it!
Tasted: December 2014
The Gamay grapes for this Niagara red wine are sourced from 28-year-old vines planted in warm, sandy loam and rock soils in the winery's Sandstone Vineyards. After hand-picking small batches of grapes, manual sorting, crushing and de-stemming, the grapes were fermented in open-top fermenters with regular punching down of the cap that settles across the top to ensure that all the flavour and colour is extracted from the grape skins. The wine was aged in 20% new and 20% second use French oak barrels for 10 months and bottled in August 2012. - Community Wine Reviews
