Santa Maria La Palma Villassunta Cannonau Di Sardegna Cannonau 2008, D.O.C., Sardinia, Italy: Vintages Wine Panel: This red from Sardinia is 100% Cannonau, which is the local name for Grenache. Garnet coloured, it boasts pretty aromas of cassis and herbs with floral notes. Flavours of spicy blackcurrant, raspberry and strawberry, along with some floral highlights continue to surface right up to its tangy, cleansing finish. This is a refreshing red with ripe tannins and a medium body. My note: terrific value with rich, full-bodied goodness! A lovely, balanced example of the Appassimento style that concentrates flavours but doesn't make the wine heavy. Very savoury. This robust Italian red wine takes its name -- Arele -- from the wooden trays that were traditionally used to dry the grapes, or a portion of them, to make Appassimento wine.
