Quails' Gate Estate Winery Merlot 2011, Okanagan Valley, BC VQA, Canada: A spectacular BC merlot with enticing aromas of fleshy dark fruit and smoke. Quail's Gate is what I'd call a merlot specialist, having elevated the whole varietal for the country. Love the cedar brush finish that leaves a wispy trail right back to the bottle. This half bottle size is great when you only want a couple of glasses of wine, and it offers terrific lemon and lime brightness. The full bottle size is also available in liquor stores now. Winemaker Anthony blends different vineyard parcels of the grapes, like they do in Champagne to create more complexity and interesting flavours. La Crema Pinot Noir 2010, Sonoma Coast, California, United States: Whenever I see La Crema pinot noir on a restaurant list, I know it's going to be a great meal, no matter what we're having food-wise. This subtle red is silky smooth enough not to clash with seafood yet it's loaded with fleshy cherry flavours for meatier dishes. Perfection though is roast chicken or planked salmon.
