Devil's Corner Pinot Noir 2017, Tasmania, Australia: We don't hear much about Tasmanian wine in North America and much less about Tasmanian Pinot Noir. This one is produced by the Brown Brothers, one of Australia’s leading family-owned wine companies who have been making wine for over 120 years. Devil's Corner is a full-bodied, juicy Pinot Noir with beetroot, tobacco leaf, dark berries and plum flavours on the palate. Great acidity for food and would do a roast leg of lamb proud. The origins of Tasmanian viticulture date back to the early 19th century, but wines from there are relatively unknown. Brown Brothers was founded in 1889 by John Francis Brown, it was under the guidance of his son, John Charles Brown that Brown Brothers established its reputation as a producer willing to experiment with innovative grape varieties from Milawa to Tasmania. Viña Leyda Lot 8 Single Vineyard Canelo Syrah 2015, Leyda Valley, Chile: A stunningly gorgeous Chilean red wine made from Syrah grapes from the cool climate Leyda Valley. Wow. Layers of fleshy ripe black plums, dark berries, violets and dark spice. So wonderfully exotic and fascinating. Soft tannins and a long finish. The winemaker uses the French method of pigeage or punch-down to break the cap of skins that forms naturally on the top of fermenting red wines to submerge it in the juice and thus extract more colour, tannin and flavour. Yes indeed. Only 4600 bottles produced. Pair with lamb and game meats. Drink: 2018-2022. 632703 14.50% D 750 mL  $19.95 Score: 93/100. March 14, 2019 Top Rated Red Wine. Full Review
Santa Carolina Specialties Carignan 2013, Cauquenes Valley, Maule Valley, Chile: The Carignan grapes are dry farmed, which adds richness, depth and character to the wine. Dry farming means that the grapes are not irrigated and must rely on the rain water that nature provides, however little that is in dry climates like this one. It also has the effect of producing smaller grapes or berries with more concentrated flavours. Complex, dry and savoury Chilean red wine with gorgeously rich black fruit aromas and flavours. Pleasant tarry-tart black cranberry on the finish. Full-bodied with a velvet smooth texture. Drink: 2017-2021. 213520 15% D 750 mL  $18.95 Score: 92/100. March 14, 2019 Best Value Red Wine. Middle-Earth Sauvignon Blanc 2017, Nelson, South Island, New Zealand: Middle Earth Winery was established originally more than half a century ago as a dairy farm and in 1996 the owners converted to grape farming and launched their first wine in 2012. Middle Earth 2017 is a nod to JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, which was filmed in beautiful New Zealand. And why wouldn't you name a wine after this epic movie that has since generated an estimated $100 million extra revenue in tourism? But the wine is lovely, with softy grassy, herbal, white grapefruit flavours on the palate, softly spiced finishing with a good length and amazingly zesty. Chill and enjoy now with grilled shellfish.
