A stunningly gorgeous Chilean red wine made from Syrah grapes from the cool climate Leyda Valley. Wow. Layers of fleshy ripe black plums, dark berries, violets and dark spice. So wonderfully exotic and fascinating. Soft tannins and a long finish. The winemaker uses the French method of pigeage or punch-down to break the cap of skins that forms naturally on the top of fermenting red wines to submerge it in the juice and thus extract more colour, tannin and flavour. Yes indeed. Only 4600 bottles produced. Pair with lamb and game meats.

Syrah food pairings: grilled lamb chops, roast chicken, grilled game sausage.

Reviews and Ratings

Colin McKone - Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Dark ruby in colour with a luscious fruit forward bouquet of plum, blueberry, baking spice and violet. It is full bodied with well balanced acidity and tannins while being high in alcohol. On the palate you are rewarded with flavours of ripe dark berries. This will pair well with lamb and grilled red meats. A terrific value for the high quality, pick up a bottle while you can. Tasted on April 6, 2019.
Andrew Bernardo rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

This is a truly stunning offering. Syrah finds its home in Chile and is by far my favourite grape emanating from the country. This wine has loads of blueberry and black currant liqueur flavours, meshed with singed herbs, smoke, hung meat, dried flowers, violets, warm baking spice, and a hit of black olive. Incredible juice. 92 Points.
Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Super unique and engaging. A dark ruby colour with a fascinating, bouquet full of character. Cherry, dried cranberries, green olive tapenade with fresh drizzled balsamic glaze. Copper and rustic minerals. Flavours reflect much of the same olive notes - very strong here. Salt driven with a sundried tomato touch. Strong, smoky (almost peaty!) and savoury. A good pairing for wild game meats. 91 points - tasted December 2018
Greg Hughes rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

West of the famous Maipo Valley region and just an hour from Santiago, sits Leyda. It's a newer region in Chile that has been crafting cool climate wines since the late 1980s/early 1990s.
They grow concentrated fruit on loam and granite. It's quite close to the ocean, so it makes for a scenic day trip.
This Syrah is part of a single vineyard selection, which has tons of structure and aromatics.
It saw large open-top tanks and manual punchdowns.
Deep, ruminating pepper, cinnamon, blueberries, and tobacco smoke, to the nose.
Pretty high alcohol, with more lipstaining blueberry and bramble. It's spicy and quite tannic, but the tannins are pretty ripe.
Pair this dazzling Syrah with moussaka or cellar it for five or-so years.
From the Leyda Valley in Chile, Canelo 2015 is a single-vineyard, cool-climate coastal Syrah at a great price. You don't want to miss this one with juicy, ripe black plums, dark berries, earth violets, black olive and dark spice flavours on the palate. Enjoy now and for the next five years. - Community Wine Reviews
