Vineland Estates Winery Chenin Blanc 2008, V.Q.A., Niagara Escarpment, Ontario, Canada: Vintages Wine Panel: Enjoy this less chilled than most white wines so the aromatics really shine: think no more than an hour to an hour and a half in the fridge. My note: this is an extremely rich and unctuous white with layers of pleasurable fleshy peach, dry apricot and pear. Love it. Never knew that Niagara could do Chenin like this. Neat! San Pedro 1865 Carmenere 2011, Maule Valley, Chile: Wow, this single vineyard Carmenere rocks! Carmenere is arguably the flagship red wine of Chile. It has it all: concentrated, rich black fruit flavours and depth, yet it's supple and smooth with a long finish. Velvet on the palate, lingering in the mind. This robust red wine finishes with notes of cassis and dried tobacco. Great balance and depth. Try it with a rack of lamb tonight. Highly recommended. Kim Crawford Pinot Noir 2010, Marlborough, New Zealand: Vintages Wine Panel: Pinot Noir is the second-most cultivated variety in Marlborough. Kim Crawford has crafted a complex and delicious wine in the 2008 vintage. It is filled with aromas of sour cherry, underbrush, raspberry, mushroom and coffee bean. The fruit is front and centre with moderate tannins adding balance. Cellar it 2-4 years, or serve it tonight. My note: Lovely cherry fruit with some cinnamon spice on the finish. Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2008, Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand: Vintages Wine Panel: The folks at Cloudy Bay are known as gurus with Sauvignon Blanc, yet their skill with Chardonnay cannot be denied. Nice intensity here, with a wide variety of concentrated citrus, peach and mango aromas and flavours to enjoy. Beautifully structured, with a mouth-wateringly refreshing acidity, lush texture, and impressive finish. Perfect with buttery lobster. My note: Supremely crafted Chardonnay! Amazing balance between fresh green apple fruit and creamy richness from oak. Buttery with a long finish. Try this wine at least once in your life. Chateau St. Jean Fumé Blanc 2009, Sonoma County, California, United States: Stunning lemon brightness pierces through the rich voluptuous texture of this wine like sunlight through a cloud. Gorgeous notes of Asian pear and green apples are wrapped in toasty oak for a long, satisfying finish. Fall-for-it smokiness gets you right into the glass, then your engulfed in lemon and lime essence that is supported by an underlying richness. Full-bodied and balanced. I terrific wine for the money.
