Clos de los Siete 2011, Mendoza, Argentina: Black pepper and fleshy black plum aromas on the nose of this blockbuster Argentine red wine, with some cassis and dark spice on a long finish. Layered, complex and deep, like math, but without the work. This red hails from one of Argentina's top producers. This wine benefits from the guidance of the famous consulting winemaker Michele Rolland. Pair this wine with asada (Argentine-style barbecued meats). Wow. Trapiche Terroir Series Ambrosia Vineyard Malbec 2010, Mendoza, Argentina: The grapes for this magnificent Argentine red wine are sourced from vineyards in Gualtallary, Tupungato and Mendoza planted at an altitude of 1307 metres above sea level in mostly sandy soil and 30% calcaire gravel. The grapes are carefully hand harvested, with bunch and berry selection and destemming. Fermentation is done with wild native yeast and maceration takes place in small concrete vats over 25 days, at 26-28ºC with a natural malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels with bottle aging of another 12 months. This Malbec offers classic aromas of black fruit, thyme, rosemary, and anise. Pepperjack Barossa Red 2012, Barossa Valley, Australia: A wow wine! Mouth-watering aromas of wild blackberry and mulberry on the nose that delivers luscious, fleshy, juicy flavour on the palate. Full-bodied and very supple with layers of caressing pleasure on the tongue. Not overdone or a fruit bomb by any means: balanced, and dignified as only the way Barossa Valley reds can do. This is a robust red wine finishes with nuances of violets, anise and a touch of mocha. Perfect for hearty meat dishes. Highly recommended. Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz Viognier 2012, Victoria, Australia: Lots of attractive black pepper and dark fruit on the nose. This full-bodied, juicy red derives a lift in the mid-palate from the splash of viognier in the blend. It delivers hedonistic pleasure and ripe, fleshy layers of black plums and blackberries. This would be a superb gift wine, but why wait for a special occasion? Cote Rotie in inspiration but pure Australian at heart. Pair with a rack of lamb, or kangaroo burger. Wakefield Jaraman Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, South Australia, Australia: Minty coolness on the nose is flooded over by fleshy blackberry richness on the palate. A hedonist's wine to fill the senses. Full-bodied and smooth. Finishes with dried herbs, tobacco leaves and cedar brush. Very satisfying, especially at this price. Pair with ribeye steak. Elderton Ode To Lorraine Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Merlot 2010, Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia: This big, black fruited red wine is produced by the Ashmead Family. It proffers a savoury, meaty note and mouth-watering acidity. Layered and delicious. I recommend many of the wines from this winery with my highest ratings, and deservingly so. Master craftsmanship here. Elderton winery is certified Carbon Neutral. I don't know who Lorraine is, but I'd like to thank her for being the inspiration for this wine. Schild Estate Gms Grenache Mourvèdre Shiraz 2012, Barossa, South Australia, Australia: Oh yum. Comfort me with mourvèdre and other old bush vine grapes. Rich, complex and deep Australian red wine: exactly what you want in a partner (and in a wine). Full-bodied and smooth and inviting. The Schild family has been in the Barossa Valley for more than 60 years. Lots of complexity, depth and vibrancy in this richly rewarding wine. Yalumba Shiraz 2014, South Australia, Australia: This organic red wine is full-bodied, smooth and delicious with aromas of smoky black plums and blackberries. Deep and rich and satisfying. Great taste for the price. It opens beautifully on the palate with rich flavours of fleshy black fruit. Some pepper and spice and everything nice on the finish. Katnook Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, Coonawarra, South Australia, Australia: Full-bodied Australian red wine with classic Cabernet aromas of cassis, blackcurrant and blackberry. Surprisingly elegant for a New World cab. Like it lots! This wine is aged for 22 months in French and American oak and offers a toasty finish. Elderton Ashmead Family Shiraz 2011, Barossa, South Australia, Australia: Black as pitch, with lots of toasty oak, smoke and tarry notes. Full-throttle Australia Shiraz in all its glory. I'm a big fan of Elderton wines, and this is one fine example of why. A lovely vein of blackberry liqueur supports this concentrated wonder. Perfect for film noir and blackened ribs. Terrunyo Concha Y Toro Carmenère 2010, Cachapoal Valley, Chile: Superb in every way! The grapes for this robust Chilean red wine were sourced from the estate's Peumo Vineyard. Winemaker Ignacio Recabarren hones his craft on this single-vineyard bottling. The Spanish word Terrunyo means terroir. Complex, deep, savoury and bursting with luscious black fruit aromas and flavours. This wine gives and gives right out to a long finish. It'll have you asking, "Where's the beef?" Domaine De Bila-Haut Occultum Lapidem M. Chapoutier 2012, Côtes De Roussillon-Villages, Midi A.C., France: Complex, mysterious and spectacular! Full-bodied, juicy, layered and smooth. Endless finish. I love the Braille label, plus the name includes a nice dose of Latin: perfect teacher's pet gift for end of the year (or perhaps now to lock in those 90s). Aromas of baked black fruit yet dry. So very delicious. Wish I knew the Latin phrase for that ... ultimum delici vinum! Taut, robust and ready to rock when you are! This full-on, take-me-on red wine has it all. Ruffino Modus 2012, Tuscany I.G.T., Italy: The 2012 vintage of this rich, full-bodied Italian red wine is a blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot grapes. The vines are planted primarily in the vineyards of Ruffino's estates of Poggio Casciano and Santedame, which is hilly clay rich in fossil fragments. The wine undergoes a malolactic fermentation and a post-fermentative maceration on the skins for 2 weeks to add richness and depth. It's then aged for 12 months in first, second and third use American and French 225 litre oak barrels. This Super Tuscan is worthy of your attention, from its ruby-violet gem glints in the glass to its finish as long as a Tuscan country road. It delivers an intense bouquet of black cherry, plum, graphite, dried tobacco leaves and dark spice. This robust red wine has remarkably polished tannins that yield to a supple, smooth texture. Delaforce Real Companhia Velha Touriga Nacional 2012, Douro D.O.C., Portugal: A full-bodied, generous Portuguese red wine with mocha and toasty oak on the nose. Black plum and raspberry with dark spices on the mid-palate and finish. Long finish on this D.O.C. wine. There's been a revolution in dry red wines from Portugal: try this one and you'll know what I'm talking about. Saved Red Blend 2012, California, United States: This robust, smooth, supple Californian red wine is a blend of 27% Merlot, 19% Malbec, 17% Syrah, 13% Zinfandel, 7% Sauzao, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Petite Sirah, 4% Grenache and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for the 2012 vintage. Select parcels from vineyards in Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara County and Dry Creek were picked blended separately to perserve their unique character. The wine was aged in 30% new French oak barrels for 16 months before blending. It offers enticing aromas of fleshy blackberries and plums, cedar forest and black cherry. This is a collaboration between one of the world's most famous tattoo artists, Scott Campbell, and winemaker, Clay Brock, who grew up in Napa Valley and is also Director of Winemaking at Wild Horse Winery & Vineyards. This particular wine is named after Scott's famous SAVED tattoo studio in Brooklyn New York and his work is etched on the bottle's front label. This wine finishes with luscious berry flavour. Seghesio Zinfandel 2013, Sonoma County, California, United States: The Seghesio Zinfandel is one of Californian's best Zins. It packed with jammy black fruit. This wine has been produced since 1895 and today the vines are ancient at about 30 years old. Serious zin for fun barbecues. The grapes for this Zinfandel grow in vineyards planted in the Alexander Valley and Dry Creek in Sonoma. Pair with gourmet hamburgers. Drink: 2013-2019. 942151 14.80% D 750 mL  $31.95 Score: 93/100.
