Loving this full-bodied Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon red wine blend with liquid dark cherry, plum, blackberry, garrigue herbs and smoky, toasty oak flavours on the palate. A juicy blend aged in French and American oak barrels. Berola is the original name for the 12th century monastery of Veruela when the land was first granted to Cistercian monks to tend and plant as vineyards.

Food pairings: lamb shanks in red wine and roasted garlic, grilled lamb lollipops, stuffed lamb tenderloin.

Reviews and Ratings

Pamela Chiles rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Edgy, with ripe berry fruit aromas and flavour up front; smoky spice, tongue-crushing tannins and head-clearing alcohol - big and brash. Decant now and drink with meat or save for next summer's barbecue! Tasted January 2021
Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

Year after year, the Borsao Berola shows quality and drinkability to the amateur of Spanish wine. Made from Grenache and a touch of Syrah, the wine exposes aromas of blackberry, prune, black tea, leather, cocoa and pie crust. The 2016 is full-bodied, showing elegance and polished tannins. Its acidity is well-layered, providing a delicious finish and many food pairing options. Palate: dried strawberry, fig, black pepper, leather, mocha and pie crust. Enjoy!
From the Campo De Borja wine region, Borsao Berola 2016 is great value under $20. Medium-bodied and made from mostly from Grenache with 20% Syrah from vines between 600 and 700 metres on stony, loam chalk-clay soils. The Grenache vines are between 35 and 60 years old with the Syrah over 10 years of age. Aged in both Bordeaux and American oak barrels. Look for ripe plum, wild herbs, cinnamon, clove, ginger spice flavours lingering smoky on the palate. Pair with a pork roast. - Community Wine Reviews
